Thanks for the detailed response, this is exactly what I'm looking for!

There is nothing about the 6xx that I don't like. I am not a bass head so they are fine in that department. I am just looking for something that may be substantially better at everything they are good at.

Price is not really an object, to a point. Considering I have spent a few thousand on a player and DAC, I don't mind spending another thousand or 2 on some great headphones.

Why won't electrostatics work with my current setup, I am certainly curious to try some out.

    Thanks.

5 bands, along with the bass and treble control is more than enough for me as I'm good with a relatively flat response. A little adjustability depending on genre or headphones is all I would use it for.

    Thanks

Electrostatics wont work fully with your current setup because your setup does not have an electrostatic amp. Your RME and Marantz only support dynamic headphones.

An electrostatic headphone requires biasing and quite a bit more voltage than what classical dynamic headphones need. On the other hand, electrostatic headphones consume very little current (regardless of what some people may say, electrostatics consume current, little as it may be - no power, no sound).

To get an electrostatic setup you will need to invest on a dedicated electrostatic amplifier, and the options are a bit more restrictive.

As far as electrostatic headphones, I like none except the HE60 and HE90. The rectangular lambda-type stax and the Koss don't fit me very well. And with electrostatic headphones good fit is very important. The omega-type stax give me a little better seal, but sound off to me. Electrostatic headphones have a pretty active fan base. They do offer very low distortion. But unless we are talking about the old Senn electrostatics, most stax ones seem to be a bit thin and colored to me. And they measure like so too. Which is why I have not bought even the less expensive lambda offerings or the Koss which fits me too loose. The Koss is probably less colored and pleasant, but again, they don't fit me well (this causes bass to roll off too much, too soon).

Looking for some advice on optimizing for the last few percents in performance. Recently completed my office setup with HD650M, Stellaris and Yggdrasil, and wondering wheer to go next: power regenerator (currently using a Furman power conditioner, very busy office environment), better cabling (HD650, ICs, power cables) or just stay put. Prefer to stay away from tube rolling for a bit and also don't want to move away from Macbook setup for convenience reasons. Any suggestions appreciated.

There's also 'energizers' which are basically step-up transformers. Woo Audio has one and Martin Logan already has it built-in which allows you to use any speaker amp.

Owner of a Schiit Magni 2 / Modi 2 stack & HE400s here. Love those, had em for a while, interested in grabbing another pair.

Thinking it would be good to get something that "pairs" well with HE400s, meaning one that doesn't quite fill the same exact role as the the HE400s and "complements" them. I mostly listen to music (rock, electronic, classical) and video games.

I know many pairs don't require an amp/dac to perform well (HE400s?) while others benefit greatly from them (HD6xx?); already have a decent stack though so that's not a limitation hopefully.

Two I have been looking at are the Massdrop HD 6xx and AKG 7xx. I've read through a lot of threads about em, it seems clear that (with amp/dac) the HD6xx is the clear audiophile, music, movie (?) Champ. But has a small soundstage, which is where the AKG 7xx shine. It also sounds like the AKGs are more analytical (?) and have more low end emphasis.

Given my uses, any thoughts on which pair (or some other pair) would "complement" the HE400s + Schiit Stack well? Was planning on the 6xx but am now strongly considering the AKG. My sense is that both the HE400s and HD6xx are excellent at mid range, but both arent know for low end or sound stage (?), which seem to be the highlights of the AKGs?

I am moving my computer out of my listening area and need something to play my music library from an external hard drive into my DAC. I won't have a screen or mouse/keyboard, so it has to be controlled from my phone. Don't want to spend more than $200.

Is an RPI with Digi+ my best option here? My main source is my CD transport but this needs to at least match my Win10 computer -> USB Gen5 setup. I see some Win10 micro PCs being sold for around $200, but not quite sure how that would work being controlled 100% from my phone.

I use a Raspberry Pi 3 with Rasplex (Plex server set up on main PC) and remote into it with my phone, plus I have my Harmony hub paired with it over Bluetooth so I can skip tracks and play/pause without grabbing my phone.

Do I even need a Digi+? Just remembered I've got a Pi3 laying around that I was going to use for a emulator build that I never got around too. USB out of the Pi good enough if it's going to Gen5 usb?

@Mystic RPi with Allo Digi+ (to keep under $200, not the 'signature' version). Minimserver on your PC as a UPnP server, controlled by Hi-Fi Cast (if Android, not sure what'd be recommended if Apple); or PiCorePlayer & LMS, for which @gixxerwimp has a good guide on the building a Raspberry Pi streamer thread. People have reported poor results straight out of a Pi.

Edit: not sure about how Pi is into Gen 5 though. And gixxerwimp's LMS guide is on P16 of the thread.

Im no expert by any means. But I've heard many people call BS on 'primo wiring' across many areas of electronics.

I asked about it before with the Gungnir and someone said it did not make the 'buy better gear' light turn on. So I think it's good enough.

The problem that I have experienced with RPi USB is that you can't hotplug. Everytime I unplugged it, it would reboot. Just be sure to use a powered hub if you make a habit of swapping cables.

Concentrate on content. Discover new and old music. I'm getting old and there is so much old music that I haven't discovered yet.

HD650 already comes with great cables. Anything else is a costly neurotic sidegrade. Stick with DNA and Schiit. They have offered upgrades. If you use a MacBook, I would expect Schiit's in-house developed USB to be something totally awesome, on the level of good CD transports, when it comes out.

As for ICs, see my cable rolling thread. The most expensive wasn't always the best. Any specific IC would be impossible to recommend as the last few percentage points is more a matter of personal preference and system synergy.

The next level is vinyl, but you don't want to go there. TTs are great for people who like to tweak stuff, but also bad for people who like convenience.

In a nutshell, you have a setup that destroys 99.999% of all other setups. Time to listen to music, not gear, and certainly not cables.

The step-up transformers seem to be a very bad investment. Consider the Wee Dynamic to Electrostatic Converter: https://wooaudio.com/amplifiers/wee

The Wee sets you back $600, and it's not compatible with none of the Stax Omegas based on their specs. Who knows if it's compatible with anything but Lambdas (which already have a cheap small form factor amp available anyway). Furthermore one may need to get a speaker amp that can put at least 3W since many headphone amps might not.

(Funny fact: It seems the Schiit Magni can put 3W into 16 ohms which might work with the Wee - but the wiring might not be plug-and-play and it maybe bare-minimum. However, the solution is there at the right form factor for the right price. But again, might as well buy the mini Stax amp Stax SRM-252S for even less than the Wee).

As far as Martin Logan I didn't know they had an electrostatic headphone w built in step-up transformer. I thought the Mikros 70 (IEM) and the Mikros 90 (B&W on-ear ripoff) both used dynamic drivers.

AKG 7XX isn't better in soundstage than HD6XX. I'd argue that perhaps it's wider, more shallow, and occasionally has hole in the middle issues.

I've heard HD6XX create a pretty deep and precise soundstage on certain rigs. Ultimately is just different and any discussion of soundstage is bullshit when it comes to headphones. It's like talking 1/4 times and trap speed among four cylinder Hondas. Anything outside of HD800 or K1000 is dumb, and even these two do not compare to speakers.

I would consider Vali 2 as an alternative amp if you want to stay cheap and keep a suitable form factor. Tubes have a way of opening up the soundstage.

Shit that's bad. I did not know the RPi3 could not power things well through USB.

Worded it a little weird but I was referring to the electrostatic speakers. None require a specialized electrostatic amp. In fact I don't think one exists. So they are all compatible with typical speaker amps and the speakers themselves do the conversion internally.

    Does not exist.

Nothing is better than HD6XX / HD600 at what they are good at.

However, there are headphones that are better than HD6XX / HD600 at what they are not so good at, but at the expense of losing a bit in what they are good at.

The only two headphones you may want to consider are the Clear / Elex. Faster transient response, marginally better mid-bass, but at the expense of less smooth FR and possibly resolution (the last item only when TOTL amps and DACs are used.)

You have no idea how much better the HD6** series can scale. If you already like what they do and can live with their shortcomings, stick with them.

Otherwise consider a radically different direction: HD800, planars, etc.

LOL! I see what you mean. Welp. It's a no go for electrostatic headphones from Martin Logan it seems.

As a side note, I don't like how Martin Logan speakers sound. Best Buy Magnolia seem to like to sell them. I think even Fry's used to carry them. They sound weird to me.

Martin Logans sound like ass, except for the CLX when set up right.
