If we were to talk to medieval folks for whom this piece of art was made my guess is they would find nothing wrong with the crucifix. They were probably less concerned with factual correctness and more with conceptual correctness. It all depends on your perspective.

 

Without studying the context of the painting, I'd suggest that it was a deliberate prefiguration of Jesus' crucifixion. The primary reason for Jesus' birth was to eventually give himself up as a sacrifice for the sins of the world. The presence of the crucifix, rather than being just a curious anachronism, probably imbued the image with an extra layer of meaning and poignancy that its original audience would have recognised and shared.

I have lived in a town with a beautiful gothic cathedral for some time, it was built very fast in fewer (sic!) than 100 years and still the people who started it knew exactly they would not see the work finished. What a mindset they must have had. Nowadays it seems that sometimes only the next few minutes count.
I guess I am getting old.
