    Soap Box Racer: Michter's Rye, Old Forester Bottled in Bond Bourbon, Czech Fernet, Buckwheat, Dandelion Root Tincture.

    I generally don't like cocktails with twee ingredients like buckwheat and dandelion-root tincture, and I actually have no idea what those two might taste like alone. But when I mixed up a version of the drink at home without them, it was just a boozy mess. So I guess they -- or maybe some similar-tasting, less obscure alternatives -- are necessary.

    Bartender said that this is now his canonical example of a spirit-forward whiskey drink. I still think the Old Fashioned serves that purpose pretty well, but this cocktail is tasty and I'd order it again.

    Charlotte Voisey's Unusual Negroni: Equal parts Hendrick's Gin, Aperol, and Lillet Blanc; if it's too sweet, add grapefruit juice until it isn't.

    Elizabeth Spencer Chardonnay. Balanced: Less acidic and bright than Ramey, but nowhere near as oaky/buttery as Rombauer cougar juice and its ilk. Has complexity and structure, tastes like actual wine.

    Hurricanes. One with alcohol, one without.

    On the left:
    • 1 oz Appleton dark rum
    • 1 oz Flor de CaƱa light rum
    • 1 oz passion fruit syrup
    • 1 oz lemon juice
    • squeeze of orange juice
    On the right:
    • 3/4 oz pineapple juice
    • 3/4 oz orange juice
    • 1 oz passion fruit syrup
    • 3/4 oz lemon juice
    • dash of Angostura bitters
