most melatonin sold OTC is dosed at like 3-10mg. Therapeutic dosage starts at 300 micrograms, which is 1/10 of 3mg. I used to get completely groggy and depressed the next day after taking 3mg. Benadryl makes me feel like I have brain damage... and the usage of anticholinergic drugs is correlated to an increased risk of dementia later in life.
I'm not given to mental-health side effects of drugs. A few years a go I took one dose of Benadryl, and felt almost suicidal. Poured the rest of it down the sink, and would never ever have it in the house again. Way back then, in my "mis-spent" youth, I took some weird stuff; had some strange experiences, not all of them pleasant. But that OTC Benadryl stands out as really... nasty.
Benadryl doesn't affect me much beyond making me drowsy. Once on an international flight though I watched my Benadryl-high friend try to wash his face with a sandwich.
lol. A very small dose of alprazolam (xanax) gets me through long flights. Small, because I would hate not to be able to be fully awake in case of emergency. (Yes, it's on prescription: actually, suddenly became quite tightly controlled where I live).
Interesting to see Benadryl reacting so differently for others. 7/10 times it doesn't clear the allergy or make me sleepy much less wash my face with a sandwich. 3/10 time I get slightly sleepy.
@DigMe i agree 100% but many skip starting with the basics and go straight for the easy way out. And this is not with just kids but in general, a more holistic approach is probably more beneficial in the long run than trying to find bandaids for everything. Speaking as a former special needs kid who did not receive what was needed and had to clean up the mess left as an adult.
