There are also "Desert Cooler" machines that cool by blowing air through wet mats: evaporation causes cooling. But they are good for deserts, not for places where the heat is very humid. Here, drying the air is as important to comfort as cooling it. I've heard the same said of Florida: probably other parts of USA have humidity blues too
Thad: I lived in the NY/NJ area for over 15 years. NYC summers are brutal with high humidity. Unlike our current city where you and I are, it does rain to cool things down
That is about the climate here @Thad E Ginathom. Although this winter did not get nearly as bad as Texas. Summer humid heat, and that will just roll into tornado season
Turned out to be a bad compressor start capacitor. Amazing how much better one feels at 10 °C lower in temp. Now in the queue to replace an 18 yo system, but in a controlled way, not panic driven.
