I agree with people saying vocals, but there's a lot more beyond that. Also need to think about it for a bit though so I don't just word vomit the thread up.

New Model Army lyrics are hit or miss. For every anthem, there’s something not great.

Sisters of Mercy have great lyrics. Eldritch really power drills a chorus into your brain.

For awful lyrics, ex-Sisters of Mercy members’ bands cannot be beaten. The Mission are like the Sisters of Mercy if they sucked. Meanwhile Andrew Eldritch programmed Floodland on a Compaq Portable.

In for a mean drummer joke:

Q: What does it mean when the drummer is drooling from both sides of his mouth?
    A: The stage is level.

I guess there is a good chance you'll enjoy Lör, Wilderun, Witherscape, Haken, Pillars of Creation, maybe Symphony X, Persefone. What about Ihsahn?

Wow people remember Sisters of Mercy and New Model Army.

    Ich hör dich rufen Marian
    Kannst Du mich schreien hören
    Ich bin hier allein

makes me feel much younger again and at the same time I realise how old I am. The only remedy being to die young, my ambitions have dwindled significantly since becoming a father. Just rambling.

Ihsahn in his own is a wanky joke
    1. In the Night Eclipse
    2. Emperor self titled EP and Wrath of the Tyrant
    3. Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk is already off the deep end. It says “Emperor only play sophisticated black metal art.” On the back and it is just as wanky and pretentious as can be. Where is the Tolkien and Dore cover art?

After years of listening to music and a lot of Rock and Metal it has become very obvious for me.

Whichever band member has the biggest ego, that is where it will most likely go wrong. (Often the lead vocalist or lead guitarist or whoever produces their sound in some cases. Remember Dave Mustaine?)

Agreed on drummers, good drummers are the invisible members that keep many songs and albums together. The fact that bands like Rush, Muse, Tool are/were able to continue to make music together is not a given.

One of my favourite drummers was Clyde Stubblefield (incredible grooves), James Brown's loyal drummer. James Brown had moments in his career where he drove his own band away. Too bad, he had Bootsy, Maceo, Clyde, Bobby and so many talented people in his circles.

Was a drummer for a long time, honestly not that good and yes the drummer is usually the weak link, unsteady, and lacking grove. a good drummer pulls it all together and makes it move
