Anyone interested in Yggdrasil MIL-B Pyrate Edition

  1. Yes, I'd like to be in a limited run of a new DAC

    48.0%
  2. Yes, although I'd rather go the upgrade boards route

Makes sense why Jason mentioned the MIL-B (MIM?) boards may be slightly more expensive than the MIL...

Looking at Digikey, that DAC11001B chip is not cheap

    DAC11001B: $74 (qty: 1000)
    DAC11001A: $45 (qty: 1000)
    DAC8812: $16 (qty: 2000)

@schiit I'm curious whether the increased cost of 11001B being due to the cost of taping out a new designs? Or, if all else being equal, does this revision itself warrant a higher cost to produce?

Fun stuff, I'm thinking I may also send my Yggdrasil LIM in to do the chassis upgrade and grab a pair of the new boards.

Wow that's a significant jump from the A to the B. I wonder if the B makes the A obsolete so they won't sell the original estimated quantity. Therefore the B has to make up for lost revenue hence the price increase.

If I'm calculating right, based on four chips you're looking at +$232 extra material cost over LIM

I thought that puts the 11001B at similar pricing with what the older AD5791 chips used to sell at? Maybe they'll end up having similar pricing? ie. Many flavors but priced the same now

Digikey lists the AD5791BRUZ at $126.97 at the moment

Yeah, inflation caused by pandemic supply chain restrictions / excess demand from USA giving out money to people, not once, but twice. At least we are over the hump. It's possible the AD5791BRUZ chips could be in short supply again if they end up in a new generation of weapons guidance systems as the USA ships its existing weapons stock across the pond (weapons do have a shelf-life). Then again, same thing could happen with the DAC11011B, but that would need time to ramp up.

Yeah, Schiit mentioned that these chips are military/medical grade.

    Hmm...

I know @schiit has plans and schemes but I'd definitely be interested in the pyrate edition Yggdrasil.

Edit: Crap, I've been away too long and only found this thread last night. Could have asked this question of @schiit yesterday at canjam if I knew.

The lower tier Schiit DACs have 8x upsampling filters. The Yggdrasil varieties are only 4x? Isn’t that a firmware upgradeable feature?

What does plankton mean? Enveloping background?

This is a reminder the link for the SBAF Glossary is broken (I assume from the Great Deletion Event)

Plankton is low level information, microdetail. A system with a lot of plankton is usually indicative of strong detail resolution.

"Enveloping background" I think confuses terms. There's blackground which is the blackness of the canvas the sound seems to be on. In image terms, think the very dark blacks of Dolbyvision vs. the lower contrast of film projection. Some systems are very black like Modius while others are more grey, like Yggdrasil A2.

"Enveloping" is usually not a term usually applied to blackground. I would say this seems more suited for talking about soundstage, but you'd need to add context. For example, you might say "the HD800 has a more enveloping soundstage than the LCD-2 because the Audeze's stage seems situated on the left and right with little perceived in the middle while the HD800 stage seems to fully encircle the head and have great width."

To pull some things together, there is a theory that systems with very black blackground (ie. Yggdrasil LIM) do not resolve as much plankton as those with a greyer blackground (Yggdrasil A2). Opinions vary on this. Personally, I think LIM obviously isn't as good at plankton as A2 but I'm not yet convinced that finding extrapolates widely.

Schiit said they are going to make the new MIL. Will have to wait. Shouldn't be that long.

MIL-F is the SBAF designation before Jason decided that the MIB would be a regular production offering.

I didn't realize a regular product offering decision had been made... takes the pressure off when it becomes available...

Actually let me clarify…Jason mentioned that cards and option to buy an MIB Yggdrasil+.

I might have read something elsewhere that MIB will be the future since the AD chips are prohibitively expensive.

Yeah, it seems OG is in “get one while they last” status.
