Pictures of your speaker system

At the risk of spamming this thread, I did want to share a quick update with you guys:

Apart from proper speaker stands all my wishes have been heard now...


I attached an image that is supposed to mimic what I see at night. Contrast is astonishing for a projector and beats LCD TVs for me.

I think I mentioned how I got a white JVC X3 for 40€ and repaired it with parts for 20€, giving me a working X3 for 60€. and then I bought this Celexon Dynamic Slate ALR tab tension screen used for 180€. All in all even cheaper than the above setup and leagues better in quality.

However prior that I bought a JVC X7 with the same ballast board issue that I have running now. More on that in the HT thread later. I will say that these projectors are super quiet, however.

For the chair I asked @ohhgourami how he liked his Eames LCW, tried it out in a store and then ended up buying a replica for myself since the prices have gotten ridiculous in recent times. See a WIP pic of his rig here:

The screen was sadly stored leaning against a wall and suffered some creases, but they are seemingly getting better. For 21:9 content it's not in the picture fortunately. And even then - straight lines are still straight, unlike the two screens I was using before, which were never quite flat.

Overrall I couldn't really have asked for more. I'm actually sort of starting to get into watching movies now, watching one almost every day now. I wish I hadn't wasted time with the shitty screens and the BenQ and went straight into a motorized tab tension ALR screen and a JVC projector, but these kind of deals don't pop up all that often...

 

And here I am thinking I could never get 15" driver OB speakers to work in my "small" living room. Whelp, maybe I'll rethink that one.

 

I *think* that some of the larger high efficiency 15" speakers might work better in a smaller room than smaller floorstanders with lower efficiency and dual 10 or 12" drivers, anyway.

Relatively speaking the larger and more efficent speakers are going to have less bass extension than the smaller and lower efficiency ones. My large OBs (Amon) have less bass extension than even my small monitors (Hathor). So if you can fit large speakers in the room - I'd say go for it.

Those TOTL audiophile speakers costing as much as a house and requiring their own power plant - with subsequent extension down to 10Hz in-room - are likely what propagated that myth. A lot of those large 12 or 15" drivers made by hifi companies are optimized for bass extension with efficiencies still in the 90dB range, while the pro audio drivers are optimized for efficiency and sacrifize LF extension. They can reach 100dB/W instead!
Very different breeds of drivers and very different applications. Both can be very low in harmonic distortion, though they have a very different sound to them. From what I've heard I prefer the nimble nature of the high efficiency drivers, though the 85dB Hathor sometimes has me doubting that this is always true. This is why they're still in my room, instead of the loaner, lol.

TL;DR: Large, high efficiency speakers like the ones @purr1n rocks should still work well in a smaller room.
In fact my OBs sounded worse in the living room than they do in my room. The rooms are both 8m long, but mine is only 3m wide, while the living room is almost 4.5m wide.

 

I'll be doing experiments in this regard as well after securing a big boy job. The room is 10x18" with speakers on the long wall, even though the short wall would probably be better, but it also has to function in other aspects.

 

I’ve said it before but it was easier to integrate the bass of floorstanders with 15s in a 10’x10’ room than bookshelves with 6.5s.

Have just bought back a great speaker I foolisly sold. Found these at CES 1992 in Vegas, a Hong Kong engineer Raymond Chang made 4 sets and was trying to break into the market. I bought his set and one other which he sent me from Hong Kong. 8 inch paper woofer, 1 inch soft dome tweeter, they are a dual transmission line. Inside the speakers are large pcp pipers that take the sound down then back and down again. The result is a stunning presentation, detail, warmth and space. The bass is so fast theres just a small port in the front of the speaker. 89.5 db effecient, the Fisher kx-200 drives them beautifyly. Ihave them back against the wall as I am moving the left speaker out slowly to find the best spot for base. There on the bases so there easy to move.

the house is beautiful, 16 acres in the country with fantastic grounds. room has 18 ft ceilings. sounds amazing ive never had a big room like this to use.

No I was purging/simplifying everything, well that lasted for a few years, with Marvs help got into headphones then back to two channel

On second thoughts, those woofers might be big, but I doubt they'd stand a chance against cat claws. Better to go for some other form of room treatment.

 

Speaking of which... we decided to repurpose my listening room/office as a kitten nursery "for a few days" while our resident cat gets used to him. Well, it's now five weeks and counting. But wait a sec... where's the cat?

 

I haven't see picture rails, with the proper hooks, for many a decade. Is that a bass trap under the cat?
