Simply moving GHG emissions from the large part of the pie created by transportation to the equally large part of the pie created by electricity generation. It's a shell game.
Electric car emission equivalents tend to be lower, but it all depends on the source of the electricity in the area. Coal burning plants are much dirtier while natural gas is cleaner and wind/solar are naturally the best. We should be focused on power generation, not simply electric cars.
Further, there are all-wind power sourced electric companies in NY and NJ, so you can power your home and car completely with wind power. The cost isn't much more, either.
Coal is becoming increasingly expensive though. Even with Trump trying to save coal, there have been a good number of coal plant shutdowns. In Texas, natural gas dominates (~40%) followed by wind. My only beef with electric cars is that ultimately you're still lugging around a ton of water.
Controlling or culling population is the best solution to save the earth. It's going to take decades if not a hundred years before solar, wind, and fusion can cost effectively generate power.
Solar & wind can be cost-effective in some places, depending on geography & fiscal regime - but they can't scale like hydrocarbons. Fusion would be great.
It's like 20 largest container ships contaminate more than all cars combined. Still stuffing those carbon particle filters, EGR and conservative ECU to even gasoline engines now in EU. Something feels to be really unbalanced here...
