Oh God the Ultrasones? Never tried those specific ones but I tried a lower-end model years back. I'm less treble sensitive nowadays I think but still cringed at the thought :))
And if memory serves, the Senns are much better value as well :))
Poor Ethiopian lambs. (EDIT: I just looked it up and it actually was Ethiopian sheepskin. Hah, the silliest reviews are always the easiest to remember)
Yup, the most memorable part of that video (besides Tyll's look of profound joy while listening) was the fact that they cost an absurd amount and that the leather used was far better than the headphones deserved.
Of course that's what Brooklyn hipsters would try.
Really though they need to interview the manufacturer and I don't know what other premium manufacturers are in the NY area. If they were in LA they could have done Audeze. The other top manufacturers are in other countries.
@Cspirou Haha, that's something I only came to realise after watching the vid. Fair point, but still wish they could have tried something less boutique-fi. I'm sure there are loads of ways they could have contacted representatives from other brands.
@Eric_C okay that I'd not thought of. IEMs and closed headphones from lesser-known companies besides. I kinda doubt they're that conniving but who honestly outside of their offices knows :))
Fair point, could just be that they wanted the hosts to experience a variety of form factors, but I can't help but wonder how things might have changed had they stuck with open-backed circumaurals all throughout :))
Well under $100 the best sound is either IEMs or porta-pros. So if it's a comparison of "the best sound at each price point ", i think it makes sense to have IEMs at the low end and open back near the top. Tyll had zero open-back <$200 on his WoF.
Although now that I think about it, there should be a premium IEM manufacturer in that area. They should have done an all IEM vid going from DD, BA and TOTL CIEM
@Cspirou Mm, being pedantic I'd actually argue that it's more important to maintain a similar form factor since, given the show's format, it makes more sense to see how, if any, improved performance there is with more $$$. I'd have loved a $ to $$$$ IEM comparison, or one for full-sized cans, but mixing them up this way is a bit disingenous.
But I'm severely opinionated so feel free to disregard :P
I wonder if other communities react the same the way we do. They didn't make the episode for audiophiles, they made it for their average viewers. And also to probably trigger actual audiophiles.
