Context: Seller posted item for sale and willing to trade. I asked him if he interested in trading for my item. And I was not prepared for his response. "i think doing a trade for items that do not have the similar retail price usually is difficult, so I do not know how even calculate this as brand new item cost xx." 30% more than posted price.

Context: I hold back the urge to unload because maybe lost in translation. So I send him a break down on the what the used market price for the items are and propose what I believe is a reasonable trade. But there was no lost in translation. He is a f'ing idiot. Believes now that we are trading, his item is worth more.

So I politely unload on him.

His response to my unload "in real life do you really think this is fair, I am sure you would not do it if you were on my side of the table, putting a price on a used item for selling is totally different than trading. In trades you compare retail to retail, especially that my item is is the flagship from XX. About me selling it for a certain price is a total different story"

I am scared that I am more stupid than I think I am if this is a thing. If it is then I need to trade my Liquid Gold with original retail value of $6000 just so I can buy his stupid item and then have money to buy another Liquid Gold.

Yeah that's slimy. Hold your price firm and either politely accept or decline a trade if it doesn't suit you. I would stay away from sellers who don't hold firm prices or aren't aware of market pricing. Run away from this guy!

And yeah, in trades you don't compare retail to retail, that's stupid; you compare current value to current value. Some items are overpriced at retail (focal utopia) and other items depreciate from being owned for a while, not being in good condition, etc. This seller clearly doesn't know how to do trades/sell.

The doggo companions here will be well aware that the value of a dog's toy increases immeasurably as soon as someone else takes an interest in it. Perhaps your seller is a dog?

The only thing you're doing wrong is loosing your time on idiots. I had some similar situation once, didn't go further the second message.

I don’t think there’s really a reason to take trade offers/negotiation as a personal offense and “unload” on someone. If you don’t agree to business terms then don’t agree and walk away. If they’re outlandish so be it. Making unacceptable offers isn’t akin to calling you the son of a motherless goat.

@DigMe Well unload is probably an exaggeration and insults were not traded. Just stated how boggling his method of establishing the value of a used item was to me.

@frenchbat Indeed. I am more frustrated with myself than the seller. Saw the rabbit hole but needed to dip my toe to evaluate it. Ended up going way deeper than I initially thought.
