I remembered listening to a college radio station while commuting a long time ago. 70% of what they played was garbage but the 30% that was good was far better than anything else on mainstream stations
I've so little patience with shitty music I tend to shortlist tracks from listening to 5-10 second snippets in rapid succession. Then I can take my time to prune what's left without as much pain. Sometimes one good track can draw me into a whole new catalogue.
I usually put a bunch of stuff I'm curious about in a Spotify playlist that I then roll when I'm doing dishes or chores or something. Then I favorite anything I like from there. Also find that Roon makes a lot of great suggestions.
Yup. Though I've found both Spotify's and Apple Music's suggestions helpful at times. I've found some really great stuff through those options. At the same time, patience and just listening to lots of stuff is the only way really. It also helps you figure out what you really like, though that in itself is a moving target most of the time.
Yeah I spend about an hour or sometimes more everyday just listening to shit mostly, on bandcamp, streaming playlists, streaming "similar artists", etc. there's such gems out there but it takes a lot of plowing. I can often tell that a song is crap in like 5 seconds. "I've heard that chord in that key in that way 6,000 times and never liked it" etc
Sorting the clearly great and clearly shit stuff is simple (insta-buy or insta-ignore), though still time consuming. However, what really drags the process out for me is stuff that falls somewhere in the middle of the spectrum on first listen.
There is a lot of stuff that you have to listen to a few times before you can put it into one of those two groups. I am always conscious of the fact that a few of my absolute favourite albums are ones I almost ignored and could have missed out on, but for some reason persevered with.
