Same.
Most of the times I think I wasted my money on audio and think to myself “I don't need any of this“ then an audio nirvana moment comes and I said “Fucking worth it! “
I know how you guys feel, I don't care though. Looks over at my 4 headphone amps even though I was going to concentrate on my 2 channel. Haha while I'm spinning a 1980 nice copy of back in black on vinyl.
Sometimes when I get an 'aha' thing making another crossover iteration I should go, 'wow, I'm good' - instead I go, holy-moly this track is magic! Under the lid love for music is selfless.
I'm always searching for how to get more enjoyment out of fewer boxes. It can be tough, but not impossible. My portable 1-box setup today destroys a 5 box living room setup I mained a few years back on all marks I care about, and the total investment is a fraction of what it once was. Maybe more boxes could make it better, but I like focusing downstream.
I agree with this 100, and it’s weird cause I get just as much enjoyment from listening to music on my HomePod or cheap Amazon BT speaker in the mornings, music is king. That doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate the benefits of better equipment though
For some people, myself included, 1/2 the "fun" of the hobby is amassing various kinds of gear and having the choice of listening to something different when I feel like it. More about the journey than arriving at the end of the line, uber equipment stack. Do I need 10 pairs of headphones, 5 amps, 2 dacs? Hell no, but I don't need 15 pairs of sneakers either :)
@rhythmdevils Set a budget that doesnt stress you out. I know your situation is different though since youre researching and developing for the high end market. Shift downmarket like ETA?
My only winceworthy old gear is a pair of Ultrasone 750's that I used throughout college and after. Metallic highs made of actual metal. Really, there's a metal plate in them.
Actually, I always thought I’d like to listen to different gear depending on mood, but I never do. I only ever use my HD650 to reassure myself that I really like the Clear Mg better. So I guess I won’t be amassing gear over the years, but I’m still hesitant to sell the HD650 because future gear _might_ have better synergy …
Another thing is different gear for different situations, though. I’ll definitely keep my Timeless, at least one dongle, at least one BT headphone etc.
