Ahaha. I went with the Auteur Classics and both suede and leather pads. I was looking for something a bit more linear with some more detail all around and up top. Not quite ready for the Atrium or Verite yet :-) I will say the Aeolus induced more head bobbing than I have ever encountered in a headphone, but in the long run I think I am a bit of a neutral-head.
I was actually on an Auteur loaner tour (only loaner I’ve ever been able to get on!) and did NOT like them at the time, but quite confident my impressions were heavily influenced (negatively) by my amp and DAC (Vali 2 and Modi Multibit 1) and the pads. Plus I understand the Classic is an improvement in many areas I think I would appreciate.
Thanks for the link @rlow. I have read some comparisons of the Auteur and Auteur classic and it would seem, by reports, that many of the issues with the Auteur were remedied with the "Classic" update. The proof will be in the listening, though. I'll give them some time once I receive them and do up a report. I'll be rocking a Lyr+, a LIM and a J2 with the DSDD bit turned on and HQPlayer.
ZMF is awesome, I had a minor issue with my first purchase, Aeolus, and Zach took care of it with no issue. Amazing customer service! Related to your HP swap, the Aeolus was my first foray into ZMF land and ended up not quite want I wanted so I ended up selling them. I then was able to hear the Atrium and Auteur Classic via loaners. The Atrium was good but the Auteur C was the HP I really enjoyed.
If I hadn’t lucked into my Meze Elite on a trade, I would have definitely upgraded my OG Auteur to a Classic. As a complement to the Elite, the OG is a perfect fit for me.
I compared my OG to a Classic and heard all the technical improvements, but the OG still has its unique charms. Needless to say, I think you’ll like your new Classic. It’s a great headphone from a great company.
Thanks for the input, gents. Yes, @ckhirnigs, I should have said that my take on the Classic vs OG reports I have read/watched is that they are different headphones - not that the Classics are a fix for any perceived issues with the OG. Ultimately, I think I am more into linearish and that the Classics will be a good fit for me. CAN'T WAIT!!!!
