Huge M Scaler finally announced. Quick question: with only digital outputs, is the idea that this thing is only compatible with BNC connections into another Chord product, such as the Qutest? How will upsampling at the M Scaler level help if you are just going to feed the signal into a DAC which has it's own sampling scheme for the music?

The HMS will work with any DAC that can take an S/PDIF input at up to 352.8 kHz.

Adapting the BNC output to the more common COAX/RCA connection is trivial (cable or adapter).

It's not the upscaling that's especially interesting, it's the filter that's applied after the data is upsampled. Those changes should be preserved by any downstream upsampling.

    --

Whether it really delivers any benefit with a specific DAC is, of course, the subject of conjecture at this point. I can say that the Blu Mk2 M-Scaler improves, incrementally, on DAVE's raw performance. HMS is supposed to be better than Blu Mk2 (due to electrical isolation, rather than any specific filtering/upsampling differences).

M-Scaler + Gungnir Multibit/Yggdrasil in NOS mode for the best of both worlds !

Filter battle between Schiit ($0) and Chord ($5k)

It's going to be an interesting comparison.

I was unwilling to buy a Blu Mk2, since I have zero desire for more physical media (that's not vinyl) and didn't want to pay asinine prices for a CD-transport I'd never user). However, I have a Hugo M-Scaler on order. And it will get tested with my DAVE, my Yggdrasil Analog 2, and whatever other DACs I have around when it shows up.

Any idea when you will receive the M-scaler? Have you heard it yet @Torq or anyone else? If so, with what?

Nvm @Torq regarding if you heard the M-scaler just read you did.

It's slated to ship in Autumn/Fall - so probably by end of year.

If I use Spotify as my only music source, would modibit -> Yggdrasil be enough delta to justify the cost?

I wouldn't personally if Spotify was all I used to listen to music. Possibly a cheaper used Yggdrasil A1.

I use Spotify myself to discover new music, but once I find something I like I'm on Amazon or discogs buying the CD.

I do believe it's worth it. However, I think a Gungnir Multibit A1 would be a better value-based decision.

If you're gunning for the Yggdrasil, might as well add a bit more and go straight to A2 and don't look back. Close your chapter on dacs, and move on to other parts of your setup. Otherwise, you'll most probably end up wondering. Unless you have iron mind. Let's face it....many don't. Myself included.

But Gungnir Multibit is a better value.

No chance to test before the buy? Not everyone prefer Yggdrasil A1 to Gungnir Multibit A1.
I sure don't and I'm not alone in that thought.

    Gumbys probably a resonanle choice,

But how to check if Gungnir Multibit is A1 vs A2? There are some b-stocks on schiit but not sure if older or newer..

I imagine the B stock would be A2 for the simple fact A2 has been shipping since late last year. No guarantee with B stock though.

A2 Gungnir Multibit will have a serial number that start with B.

I thought it was determined that there was no Gungnir Multibit ver 2/B. Are you confusing it with Yggdrasil?

To be more constructive; have you read the Gungnir thread? You should read the Gungnir thread.
