Do you like the Sony MDR-V6 or 7506 (equivalents, for the most part)?

It's been a long time since I heard a V6. I seem to remember thinking its treble was a little rough for me. I also just listened to a pair of ATHM50s and thought they sounded pretty bad. Treble was a little plasticky.

Hmm. I have the V6 and find them very easy to listen to, so I may not be able to help. I thought the M50x sounded like bloated garbage. Okay, maybe not that bad, but definitely billowy and distant.

Maybe the Senn 280 Pro, actually. Should be darker than the V6.

Yeah, I am really sensitive to treble. It's why I keep coming back to the HD650s for my main cans.

I'm not sure that any closed headphone will be free from hot and sticky once the summer kicks in. My Senn Momentum 2 seems pretty close to what you're looking for though. You'd be hard pressed to get it for $125.

haven't heard it personally, but the fostex t50rp mk3 fits the bill, you could order some zmf or alpha pads for it too.

@fraggler I was gonna say a Beyer Dt150 but seems it's almost twice as expensive across the pond. Perhaps used? It's the only Beyer i like probably because it doesn't sound like one. Really balanced presentation, good bass, non recessed mids, non agressive treble, maybe a bit boxy sounding. Tyll liked it too when he measured it. Built like a tank but ugly as f**k though.

I want something faster, cleaner sounding and deeper bass then the HD650's.
I've owned all LCD's except XC and 4, so I dont want Audeze anymore, well the EL-8 open back seems interesting?
HE-560 is tempting, but I have big ears and prefer to not modify...

    What you guys think?

True enough. The new Momentums certainly tempt, as I really liked the originals. Would probably still have them if the earpads had been bigger. Not yet ready to jump to the $200 plus level yet.

At this point, though I am pretty loathe to get back into headphone modding, I might give the Fostex a shot again since I still have a ton of modding materials left.

Fostex TH-X00 would be a good fit, very bassy, similar sound signature to the HD650. I found it likes solid state power to keep the bass tight, but YMMV.

A good DT1350 with HD25 ear pads and you can be done. The bass on the DT1350 with smooth midrange and highs is a treat.

Sony treble either hurts or sounds great. I consider the V6 a torture device at medium-high volume.

But the TH-X00 also have very tiny ear openings...

That discussion over rated. I have dumbo ears and I fit fine.

No removable cable on the TH-X00, but never understood why that was a sticking point. Cable is pretty nice. Others have changed termination on end to be balanced if that is a concern.

Well I used to have a pair of Denon AH-D2000, and I hated the cable on them

I had a DT880 for around 5 years (iirc), cable never died on me. If you don't need to reterminate, is a non-removable cable really a big deal?

I'm starting to consider my next significant purchase and figure it will represent my single most largest cash outlay and hopefully my end game headphone.

    Current gear...
    Oppo HA-1
Mr. Speakers Alpha Dogs with stock balanced cable
    Uptown Regen Amber

I am not into classical. I listen to classic rock, new wave, 90's alternative/hard rock, modern rock and synth pop. Favourite bands include Roxy Music, Depeche Mode, Metric, RHCP, Faith no More, REM, NIN, GNR, Pearl Jam, Pink Floyd, Led Zep, Crowded House/Split Endz etc.

I figure the alpha dogs will serve me well when I need isolation but I'm looking at a higher end open HP that will compliment my AD's by offering something different.

The PMx2 and HD800s (both with balanced cables) are very intriguing. But the HD 650 could be a dark horse choice as well.
