        When I got my card, which was maybe 2002-ish, it was already obsolete and being sold at about half price... and a hundred uk pounds was *still* a huge amount of money to spend on a sound card! But not as much as Lynx, which was probably nearer a thousand of those pounds even then.

        Analogue i/o and optical digital i/o. With a tape-switching box, a couple of tape decks and a mini-disk it all combined with my PC as a fairly complex record-anything to anything-else setup.

        And first off was the experience... "Huh? This sounds better than my Cyrus CD player!"

        Compared to MP3, It is significantly better at the same bitrate or equal at lower bitrates. It is MP4, built to improve on MP3 in many many regards.
        Don't take my word for it, look at some results:

        Note that MP3 has an extra ~30kbps to work with and still loses.

        The true answer may be a bit of everything - effective resolution, power design, output stage and other stuff. It's still a great-sounding DAC for the money, if you feed it properly, though. Clean, low-jitter non-mobo SPDIF and clean power, then into an amp that itself has clean power gets you a long way.
