Yeah Guttenberg is mostly entertainment rather than a hard evaluation of gear - most of his reviews put products around a similar level with only a sense of their flavour. Every once and a while though he either goes gaga, or seems lacklustre, which can tell you something I guess.
I find that it's useful to parse his comments using a "Guttenberg filter". If he's ambivalent about a piece of gear and doesn't praise it, there's a 90% chance it's garbage. If he actually criticizes something, which he rarely does, then that probability goes up to 99%. Beyond that, it's hard to say much. He likes almost everything he reviews. But I agree that he seems like a nice guy and makes some good videos.
The most charitable reading is that he sees the best in everything. I've seen him be more direct with his friends. His reviews are written for total noobs, and it's not even good guidance for noobs.
I think his choice of gear is generally good even if his reviews don't tell you much. I've discovered a lot from him as a new audiophile and I'd rather new people read him over some other horrendous sites I've encountered.
Strong agree with above. Guttenburg is vastly better than the recent spate of under-30 audiophile youtubers, plus he has this this slightly-tempered-by-age maniac spirit of a former beatnik.
@Superexchanger You just kind of described what I enjoyed about watching him. Maybe it's age-ist, but seeing the older demographic doing these reviews leaves me with a better overall feeling.
