ASR acolytes are turning up everywhere spreading the "gospel" of audio truth. An occasional thread of ASR fanatic troll bashing feels good (or at least a good read).

Imagine being a Meteorologist, but only using temperature to predict the weather.

 

I wonder how many times in the history of mankind we have thought we knew everything there is to know about the universe, only to later find out we know very very little, or were completely wrong about something we were sure was correct, or missed something very important. Bleeding sick people used to be not only accepted by doctors and scientists, but was felt to be a fact.

Blindly following current scientific theory and ignoring your senses is like a scientist telling you that gravity does not exit and then believing it is true and going around yelling at everyone who is mindful of gravity when they hold something.

It is no different than trusting our own senses when the science does not match.

Furthermore, the point of audio is not to meet scientific standards set by people who don't know enough, but the point is to meet the delight of our senses.

imagine measuring a painting with some kind of 1 fits all number and then measuring every painting using that method and drawing a graph ranking all the paintings in the world used on this universal theory. And then buying the one on the top without even looking at it or paying attention to what you feel when you look at it.

You'd probably wind up with a 5 year old's drawing on the wall of your living room made by someone who has never held a paintbrush or pencil and looks like this and feel really good about yourself. but would you feel anything from it? That is the point of painting. To invoke emotion, and communicate emotion.

and if yo utry to say that music reproduction is not art, and that the music is the art and the reproduction is not art I would love to have an art restoration master chime in here. The way a painting is lighted, the way the colors and textures and everything else are reproduced all inhibit or allow you to feel what the artist painted. And with audio, it is much more complicated thatn reproducing a painting.

To be fair, a five year old's art can evoke a lot of emotion as well so you're giving much benefit of the doubt to Audio Simplifies Rhetoric.

I was a teacher's assistant at a SPED school once and there was a little girl with cerebral palsy who wrote my name out on paper as a gift. It's archived in storage for now, but I cried like a baby when I got home later that day.

 

My personal view is, "Why worrry about it? Life's too short."

I kinda had to laugh when I read the OP's post because it reminded me of someone saying we can't act on what we know to be true about our universe, for example, getting ready to actually land a spacecraft on the Moon again here soon because of Juan Maldacena's ADS/CFT (anti De-Sitter Space/Conformal Field Theory). Which I should add, is a "hypothetical universe".

I was a hard objectivist back in the days too, until I started listening to some gears.
Just the other day I was comparing the Topping A30 / D30 Pro stack to my own, and the subjective gap is not small, even to the Topping owner. You could tell clear differences between D30 pro's FIR2 and FIR7 for instance, despite both of them measuring great. I don't see ASR investigating an objective metric that correlates with this? Are people in ASR not hearing the difference, or simply not daring to post their subjective observations there?

A big part of what ASR is missing is transient response analysis, which I only found here with the cycle burst/decay plots.
So where ASR only focuses on steady states signals testing, SBAF goes scientifically deeper and explores more technical metrics.. Irony

 

yes true. Art is so subjective that's the only thing I could think of that people would think was shitty! But you're absolutely right.

ASR declares light is only a particle and we should restrict all inquiries to brightness, as studying waves leads to ruin as they cannot be measured as a single point.
