Flying in Asia is quite a bearable experience. Flying to or within North America is just horrible, and dehumanising is a good descriptor. I found the security (theatre) process and inflight experience to be the main problems.
There was a woman in front of me in the security line who had long hair. The security guard told her the x-ray machine won’t see through her hair and to make sure it’s all behind her back because if it’s hanging in front of her they’d have to examine her breasts to make sure there was nothing illicit under the hair. “Better they examine your back than your breasts” was the exact quote. f'ing unreal.
It won't help all the time or everywhere, but if you fly even just a couple times a year with the occasional trip abroad, joining the Global Entry program is a must. $100 gets you 5 years of TSA Precheck and slightly expedited processing through US Customs. At least in Chicago, the TSA Precheck line lets you go through without removing shoes, laptops, or even liquids the last time I flew.
Re. the comments on foreign vs US airline experiences: Air Canada often advertises itself as 'best North American airline', which I've always thought is like 'best North American cricket team'.
