For the sound you get compared to similar price peers I'd say it'd appeal more primarily to a smaller niche, i.e. people who actually give a bother about microdynamics and "texture": X00 is more fun and spacious; Bose and Sony NC wireless have far more features and QoL bits; A-T has a more pop savvy presentation; Grado has "PRaT" and cult following.

I don't have a long view of things but I think the HD600/650's appeal is just more apparent to people who've tried too many things and want normal.

Guessing but the HD6XX's popularity might have been incited in part by the 650's reputation among old-school audio enthusiasts. Senns would still be a good buy because they ARE awesome, but broke people (cough) would have been waylaid by other cheaper cans.

For those who know what they're doing (and like that kind of sounding), maybe still of much value I think. But, for $500, I can't recommend it for blind buys (regardless of personal preferences or tastes) for a noob.

I do think it might lead to a bit less idiocy regarding "HD 650 killers" because right now, it seems that many don't appreciate the HD 650 for what it is and see it as some entry-level can. That being said, it would be a hard sell at meets; the HD 650 sounds super underwhelming in meet conditions (stuff like Utopia or SR1a sounds super impressive).

Yes. The 250-500 Dollars/Euros region is still a good place for headphone purgatory. Plenty of choice.

I don't use my 6xx much, but they're a good reference / tool in the tool box. For $500 though, it's a tool I could live without.
