Hum, good question on a robust definition. I would say it's the detail of the small changes in tonality, most obvious in the vocal region and with instruments like the violin.
I notice it most when going from main rig to something well below, like the Bose Q35 I use for exercise - little changes in tonality go missing along of course with everything else
Perhaps it's timbre, though I might have a more "romantic" (for want of a better word) definition of timbre that includes the sense of "inner body" and the like.
Like how you can sense a different intent depending on minute changes in vocal inflection or how someone presses a piano key? Mm, I think I get where you're coming from but that seems to fall under microdetail with competencies in time domain stuff (i.e. doesn't get muddled). Could be wrong though, not sure if that's what you're after.
an instrument has a fixed tone over a given range. I think you mean subtle inflections and intonations of the performer which reveal more of this tonality. this is already what resolution and microdetail mean to me anyway
A voice in use, or a violin being played, often changes subtly moment to moment excepting perhaps an exercise. Just throwing this out there to see if it sticks. I admit that the concept might not be a useful distinction beyond microdetail, but I think it might...
Continental measuring system or imperial measuring system? If you actually have to measure by hand, that is key. After that we can gather data, process it and chart it to sell the audio industry new standards while listening to Koss PortaPros.
