I think Susvara is excellent. The most complete headphone I've heard, and I auditioned pretty much every high-end HP I could get my hands on about six months ago. IMO, the HE1000SE is very good, too.
HE-560 with focus A pads was kinda fun. I listened to Act I of Figaro with it. The attack was fast and the extra bass (which doesn't show up on the FR) was fun. I never bought one, because I knew I'd seldom use it.
Yeah I bought an HE560 upon release and forced myself to believe it was better than HE500. It definitely does some things right but a lot wrong. Still liked it. For sure Focus A pads are a must.
they're alright. they do have a house sound, esp after the release of HEK. Airy, speedy and ethereal with wide lateral staging, almost like trying to go for that electrostat sound. But at some expense to slam, and dynamics esp compared to pre-HEK models (which weren't tuned by Fang Bian). I find their tuning to be somewhat the opposite of Audezes.
My He-500 sounded quite nice but came with such piss poor finish and the other noise i read about QC issue's has removed Hifiman from any consideration.
I don't think you've missed much. I have played with quite a few cheaper models (<= $500), and none of them made me really happy. Because there's always a / some / many but(s), sound-wise, price-wise, "I've had XXX, why do I need these"-wise...
Recently I tried Verum 1 MK2, that made me feel good, never had that feeling using Hifiman headphones.
I also like my HE6SE, and it was damned cheap and is made well enough IMO. I don't really have a huge beef with the build quality of other current HFM either. They could be more lux, yes, but almost all of them are light and comfortable and that counts for a lot, too. I know HFM aren't much repped on SBAF, and the constant new models is corny, but I wouldn't discount them.
Their house sound (for the current affordable models) is just not my cup of tea. Too much focus on treble. I did like the Arya Stealth for its technical prowess, but personally, I’d have to EQ it.
