I am just going to leave this hear. Yes this is real and not a parody over dub. For pure amusement, I can't recommend the English dub of Golgo 13 enough.

It's exactly where I got my username from! :)

The ToG Universe is really interesting and I'm glad SIU has made it this far. I'm really enjoying the anime version and the art style. It reminds me of his early art style when he started the series. I know I may be one of the few, but I really enjoyed SIU's earlier style. I thought it added to its otherworldly feel.

If anyone could recommend an Anime that isn't about power creep......it would be welcome....Its just a formula that just gets so ridiculous by the end, universes should be crumbling

anything....like I liked legend of the galatic heroes...even the remake of it. Just most animes like bleach, tower of god, naruto, etc, just all too much about "mastering a new technique" that you didn't know and get stronger, but there is always stronger thing is getting tiring. I liked jojo's bizarre adventure stardust crusaders because its not like they get stronger and stronger nonstop.

Holy shit this entire list was just a slap of nostalgia. I wanna rewatch Robin now, AAARGH. Of the list don't think I've ever seen Rahxephon, which is weird cuz I've been hearing of it for... a fair amount of time, haha.

    I'm getting old. Damn.

@tommytakis haha the hand-animated segments are lovely! By contrast the moments when they shift to CGI people feels jarring, but I suppose there were matters of budget and time constraint to take into account. Not the most egregious use of it though, and I have to admit the overall aesthetic is a great mix of various influences.

I'm just on 3rd episode for now, but this is genuinely enjoyable so far, haha.

    @Cellist88 adding my own few:

    1. Serial Experiments Lain
    2. Rozen Maiden
    3. Baccano+Durarara
    4. The Tatami Galaxy
    5. Bakemonogatari. Yes. Really.

Just finished watching Goblin Slayer season one. Short, sweet and not too much filler. Reminds me of Berserk, there is even a homage character (knight with dragon-slayer) looking like guts in the animé. I guess even the artists in the animé/manga industry want an end to the Berserk saga.

Maybe later I will check season 2 if available.

Watching Kill La Kill again. It is more fun than most series will ever be without dragging out the plot.

I absolutely adore KLK and I don't even usually like fighting anime. (I'm more of a slice-of-life comedy guy myself.)

Kill La Kill is bonkers in a great way. So absurd and hilarious at the same time.

For those of you who want to pick up a few great Manhwas. Red Storm is one of my favorites. Some of the best character and world building I’ve read since Hunter X Hunter. Solo Leveling is beautifully drawn and Gosu has some incredible fight panels.

I wish that they would remaster/remake some of the classics. Nowadays there are too many animes that has a 37y i just can't find anything interesting in them. Sometimes it feels like they avoid darker animes like the plague, that's why i liked Goblin Slayer. I had hopes for black clover but just turned out to be another teenager action/drama/comedy dream.

The anime market matured. People that produce things found out what sold so experimental series became far rarer; better to go with the flow and make something that'll at least cover cost of production than take a gamble that might cost a lot of money.

I'm one of the weirdos that love the heck out of late 90s and early 2000s series because they marked the cusp of an era when it didn't cost obscene volumes of cash to make series but they hadn't yet figured out formulae for boring series that are bound to at least do mediocrely. I love shit like Red Data Girl, Kamisama Dolls, and Shadow Skill (one of the best opening songs EVER), and regret that the overall tone of the entire industry seems to have grown... same-y. Heck I'd even settle for a Monster Rancher remake, never mind it'll likely become a massive commercial for toys and games— Monster Ranger 2 was an addiction back on PS1.

I kinda actually enjoyed Seikaisuru KADO even though I'm normally biased against CGI anime (Land of the Lustrous is possibly the sole exception off the top of my head)— it was a bit of a trainwreck towards the close but at least it tried to do SOMETHING differently in its narrative.

Ailes Grises remake when. I hope they don't mess with it like they did with Kino's Journey cuz the sequel series was a bit disappointing.

    P.S.
Shadow Skill opening: I still often play this when I bother using a treadmill, so hype!

I enjoy the 90's and 00's as well but in the last few years it's been hard to find anime that i actually enjoy.

If it still looks good in 720p, it can hold up. This also includes a lot of Studio Ghibli works ;)

The worst parts of 21st century animé is the combination of bad C.G. and bad story telling. I do not mind recycled tropes and plots. Thing is without a good story that connects the beginning, the end and the characters I will tap out at one point.

A conversation yesterday inspired me to create a tier list of anime created by manly men for manly men. When I created the criteria for this list I thought of a mix between Sean Connery's James Bond and 80's action films like Lethal Weapon with a certain level of maturity. No fucking moe shit here. That is for dweebs by dweebs. The two perfect examples are Golgo 13 The Professional and Fist of the North Star. Testosterone driven adventures. I compared all of the anime of this list to those two. Obviously this is not an exhaustive list, there are going to be some I forgot and people are going to have different interpretations and opinions. Also I tried to keep the anime to before 2000 with 1 or 2 exceptions.

Edit: I should also add this list is fun to compile anime that fit the criteria. There many good/great animes that not on this list. It was a debate to whether or not I should put my favorite anime series Beserk (1997) on this list but think it leans towards being just mature rather than "For Manly Men". Also I would recommend researching these before you watch them with a loved one or child (like Wicked City, Madbull 34 or F tier).

    S Tier
This tier is reserved for the best of the best
Golgo 13 The Professional (1983 Film)
Fist of the North Star (1984 TV Series)
Cyber City Oedo 808 (1990 OVA series)
    Ninja Scroll (1993 Film)

    A tier
For pretty damn good manly anime
    Space Cobra (1983 TV Series)
AD Police Files (1990 OVA Series)
    Demon City Shinjuku (1988 film)
    Wicked City (1987 film)
    Neo Toyko (1987 anthology film)

    B tier
Doesn't quite have the quality or elements to get to A tier
Goku Midnight Eye (1989 OVA series)
    Vampire Hunter D (1985)
    M.D. Giest (1986 and 1996 films)
    Mad Bull (1990 OVA Series)
    Riding Bean (1989 OVA)
Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust (2000 film)

    C Tier
These are just fun but still manly
    Big Wars (1993 Film)
    Crying Freeman (1988 OVA series)
    Biohunter (1995 OVA)
    Armitage III (1995 OVA series)
    Angel Cop (1989 OVA series)
    Wild 7 (1994 OVA series)
    Spirit Warrior (1988 OVA series)

    D Tier
This tier is for animes that mature audiences would enjoy but doesn't meet the "For Manly Men" criteria. There is alot that could be added to this list but these are just off the top of my head.
Ghost in the Shell (1995 Film)
Highlander: The Search for Vengeance (2007)
    JIn Roh (1999 Film)
    Black Magic M-66 (1987 OVA)
Blue Submarine No.6 (1998 OVA series)

    F tier
This stuff is just awful (not even going to put in the effort for year and type)
    Apocalypse Zero
Violence Jack (its awfulness is somewhat amusing)

Wow, this can be an involved discussion.

    My top recommendations are

Ghost in the Shell: OVA 1, 2 and the 1st movie. Innocence drags. I was happy with the GiTS Arise remake. As much as I love this series (watched OVA 1 3 times, OVA 2 twice, movies, various times) I wasn't butthurt about the live action movie. At least we got it on the screen, and it wasn't too far from the original plot.
Serial Experiments Lain. This is outstanding WTF anime
    Macross Saga. A classic.
    Cowboy Bepop (obviously)
    Bubblegum Crisis (both versions)
Neon Genesis Evangelion. OK. This has a bunch of whining characters, but is worth the ride to the end. It goes through a savage intense period, which reflects the actual production strain they were under finishing it. Then the WTF ending in the original, and a couple other remakes of the ending. Its worth a watch.
Blood: The Last Vampire is a nice ride also.

There is a ton of other ones, but I will stop with these 7 for now.
