I took the plunge, but my preferences lead me towards the focal dynamics over the more distant hd800. They're real different from each other hah so that could be good.

I hopped on it as well. Hoping it and the ZDS can really bring out the disco.

ZD with Elex was phenomenal when I tried it. Missing the last bit of technicalities of the Utopia but really really nice.

My "stay off SBAF until after the holidays because you'll just buy shit" hiatus is over, and I'm already considering an LCD-2C. Dammit.

Anyone have any recommendations for good / reasonably priced 2 x 3 pin XLR balanced > 4 pin XLR balanced adapter?

Why not make your own? Good start to learn how to solder if you don't know how, not necessarily cheaper if you still need the tools though...

Hmm...I'd been planning on getting an HD6XX to KISS mod the next time it was on MD, but maybe it's not worth it now that I have the HD800...

Less then 200 Dollars? Get it and you have good spare headphone that is not to expensive to modify.

It is not uncommon to read that people here prefer the HD6xx (modded). It is well worth $200 to find out, imo. At worst, you end up with two excellent headphones that sound quite different from each other.

Most people start with the 6xx and get the 800 in an attempt to upgrade- spend ages modding the 800 (which does improve it a great deal) before reverting to the 6xx anyway. It's all part of life's rich pageant, and it's nice to have the 800 around for the contrast.

Picked up an HD800 w/SDR mod. Jesus Christ, where have these been my whole life?

Did you install the mod yourself? I'm thinking about downgrading to this from Utopia.

Nope, bought it pre-modded, so I've never heard one stock. (And haven't heard the Utopia either, sadly.) It does sound great, though...amazingly spacious and detailed, definitely not fatiguing, and I couldn't pick up on the treble peak the stock one has, so I'm guessing the mod took care of that. You're probably more used to high-end cans than I am, but I'd definitely recommend.

Happy Sukkot, everyone! Got my Sukkah built, dinner cooking, and guests on the way. Almost to the home stretch of the Jewish Holiday Season!

When a pal of mine got a law job "out of town," he told his boss he needed to take some time off to build a sukkah. The utterly confused fellow quipped, "Sukkah? As in: I'm gonna get you sucka?!"
