Dunno, but I got @JK47 wet dream here. Following up on @purr1n post, I went to the Daytona Flea Market, which we locals call it the local white trash ville. I don't buy that much stuff on here, but I do walk around for the LOLs.

I really don't know why I am doing this, but @internethandle it was my understanding that Merrick got a temp ban since he posted politics outside of this thread (more than once). Yes, I did respond to him once in that comment post but honestly I should had left it alone. Fun fact: Not everyone comes to SBAF to see someone talking about politics. This isn't picking on the left wing dude here.

I too should have known better. I don't mind engaging in dissenting discussion, but obviously there are appropriate channels for that.

Fine line. I rarely post anything political on my profile posts (you will find that anything I post political overwhelming is on this thread). Furthermore, I have family in Israel so it hits close to home.

It all goes back to SBAF being a dive bar, you have to know when/where it is cool to have a conversation about it. Overwhelming of folks just wanna talk about good audio.

I don’t have a problem keeping it in here, particularly. I definitely don’t come here for politics, I’ve got other outlets for that.

I've posted "faecal matter" (with the diphthong) twice on the profile posts. Mind you, one was related to audio gear.

Chatting area. Say anything. Get answered, ignored or shot down: that's chat.

Restraints? As far as I ever knew, just simple manners. Not going too far beyond plain decency.

Of course, living in a world where one person's simple politics is another person's well-beyond-decency, such distinctions can be far from clear. Same for international relations.

I'd hate not to be able to sometimes knock heads together with people, sometimes people very much not like-minded about some things!

It's capricious, based on upon a number of factors:
    • How incessant, that is without pause
    • Readers' moods, that is how many people bitch, and that bitching gets past the mods and to me directly
    • Mods get annoyed by you (less capricious than me)
    • My mood
    • Related to how incessant: how overwhelming political
    • Ability to pull off being a reporter (good) -vs- twit (bad), e.g. @YMO posting the FL flea market photos and letting us decide - that is pretty safe.
    • How extreme you are on the Pew Typology Quiz (https://www.pewresearch.org/topic/politics-policy/political-parties-polarization/political-typology/).
      • It's best for people on the fringes not to say anything
      • People on the very-left may get called names or on occasional silenced for a temporary period of time.
      • And in case people on the very-left complain, people on the extreme right are actively outed and perma-banned
FWIW, I'm Ambivalent Right. Pew nailed my views in the commentary section of the quiz. However, given how polarized things are, I'm sure most young people view me as righter than Genghis Khan.

"Monsieur, my son is 22 years old. If he had not become a Communist at 22, I would have disowned him. If he is still a Communist at 30, I will do it then.”

    George Clemencau

When a journalist hinted to his son being a communist

I think there is some truth in that

The great Catholic divine G K Chesterton said something similiar but I can't find the quote right now. I found this good one instead:

“When the business man rebukes the idealism of his office-boy, it is commonly in some such speech as this: "Ah, yes, when one is young, one has these ideals in the abstract and these castles in the air; but in middle age they all break up like clouds, and one comes down to a belief in practical politics, to using the machinery one has and getting on with the world as it is." Thus, at least, venerable and philanthropic old men now in their honoured graves used to talk to me when I was a boy. But since then I have grown up and have discovered that these philanthropic old men were telling lies. What has really happened is exactly the opposite of what they said would happen. They said that I should lose my ideals and begin to believe in the methods of practical politicians. Now, I have not lost my ideals in the least; my faith in fundamentals is exactly what it always was. What I have lost is my old childlike faith in practical politics. I am still as much concerned as ever about the Battle of Armageddon; but I am not so much concerned about the General Election. As a babe I leapt up on my mother's knee at the mere mention of it. No; the vision is always solid and reliable. The vision is always a fact. It is the reality that is often a fraud. As much as I ever did, more than I ever did, I believe in Liberalism. But there was a rosy time of innocence when I believed in Liberals.”

I like stories. If you are protesting or helping out protesters, feel free to describe what is going on on the ground. I like to hear from boots on the ground because news these days slants things one way or another, or tends to way overplay things to make a story (this has always been the case). FWIW, I hate reporters. If you have ever been interviewed by news reporters and read the final article in the papers, it's usually a WTF LOL experience.

I also hate hippies. So by extension I hate professional protesters, that is protesters who protest for the sake of protesting, rebels without a clue, or protesters who protest the cause de celebre. (What happened to the protesters against the big evil banks?) Not to mention that any time protests reach a critical mass, unsavory (criminal) elements are attracted to them. It's just a sign of the times.

When I was in University, a bunch of kids barged into my class telling us there was a protest in the quad. The TA said it was up to the class to decide what they wanted to do. Everybody in class decided to skip and go protest. I was like f**k this because: I wanted to learn, this was on my dime, the class was gonna end in a half hour (of which the kids could go protest for the rest of the day). That's when I realized that most kids are stupid. They were either rich so they didn't care, didn't care about their parent's money, took loans (pay back later) so they didn't care. Maybe two people were left, another person and I. The TA cancelled the class. Only two people got an A in that class. You can guess who.

In the university classes that I taught, when I compared the grades of the students who regularly attended vs those who skipped, on average the attendees were a full letter grade better. No surprises really.

Now it's online sections vs in-person. And it's more than just one full letter grade difference.

But for that, it's hard to dissect student effort vs instructor effort....

I fully expect that in the places like Columbia, Yale, and Harvard the grades of those who skipped to protest would be full latter grade better. Why? Because they and the people who grade them belong in the same tribe. And that's all that counts these days.

You seriously overestimate the amount of time and mental bandwidth that an instructor at any university anywhere has to care about their student's social or political leanings.
