Our time on earth is fleeting. It goes by fast and feels faster as we get older. I look at this old photo of me holding my daughter when she was an infant with chubby cheeks. I had long hair back then with a ponytail. That was just a few years before I started Changstar. My daughter now drives and is heading to university next year. Today I have a bald spot at the top of my head and my son has me soundly beat in the number of pull-ups he can do. It feels like a microsecond has gone by.

I knew Rex / David the most. When I created Changstar, none of the early "founders" (@CEE TEE, @rhythmdevils, @ultrabike) knew who the heck he was. He just signed up and starting hanging out - totally blending in without anyone batting an eye. It was weird because he in a sense, he was a "rando", but he just felt like he belonged. David mostly talked about non-audio stuff like Ancient Aliens. Ever time I watch Ancient Aliens with my son, I am reminded of David.

The last conversation I had with David, he confided in me that he had leukemia, was in remission, but that his immune system was shot. He said that this immune system was normally strong and that he expected to come back soon. Then bam. He died.

I do not obsess or cling to people who have left us; but I do cherish my memories of them, how they've touched us, and mostly importantly the lessons from death: that we can't take it with us when we die, that we bleed when cut (we are mortal), and that we should try to live each day as if it's the last day of our lives (this doesn't mean we do dumb stuff like Joe vs. Volcano, but that we try to live each day well).

@atomicbob: thank you for starting this thread. I've wanted to do something like this on past November 1-2 but always got sidetracked.

I think Rex and I chatted about DACS, both having the very modest (especially by today's standards, financially, at least) Echo Audiofire firewire DAC.

IIRC, we even discussed whether or not an ODAC would be an upgrade! In fact, I did buy one, but reverted to my Audiofire, which remained in use from those days right up to this-year's purchase of a MOTU M4.

I also knew Rex the best. We'd chat about his random big boi horn experiments, usually some JBL components that he'd fished off craiglist or ebay.

I had another fried who passed just last year in much the same manner. Young guy too. So was Rex. f**k cancer man.

    Wisdom attained with age.

I live each day as if it might be my last. I'm in that age group for whom it very well could. Never take anything for granted.

This song has the odd charm of David Bowie, the heaviness of Kyuss and the Blues sung by Josh Homme. It always hits me me harder than I expect. Usually a closer song in my playlists. It is this song or "Fortress" for me.

Any idea what happened? I was under the impression from the nature of his posts that he was fairly young.

I understand the intent here, guys, but my gut tells me that any more discussion than this may be a bit inappropriate, and not in keeping with the purpose of this thread either. I'd be pleased if a mod were to move/clean this up just a touch, literally for posterity's sake.

And that's certainly something that should be respected. The asterisk is if there is a lesson or meaning to someone's story which would be helpful to others who might be suffering and by knowing they'd be helped. There is respect in silence but it also deprives people about what is going on now in the world and knowing what people are struggling with. Of course, sometimes things are too complex for public ears.
