Any old school Sierra fans around? I had totally missed that there was a new and modern King's Quest game out!

    https://store.steampowered.com/app/345390/Kings_Quest/

Released in 2015 as an episodic adventure but you can get the complete series now. Only getting started and a few hours in but as an old school gamer I can sense already that this is going to be a treat. Some of my earliest video game memories are from me and a bunch of friends playing Sierra games.

I know it wasn't universally liked but I really enjoyed these and I'm hoping more are coming.

In switch news, Super Mario Party is getting stellar reviews. I for one am looking forward to more party games hitting the switch.

Recently, I finally carved out the time to finish Mario Odyssey. I've found 493 moons and it looks like there are tons more. It's unfortunate that the game doesn't explain the most useful moves (ground pound jump, hat dives) until late in the game. The mobility you have as Mario is astounding and it controls so well. I was worried I wouldn't like the game at first but the controls are pretty damn perfect.

I'm really digging the switch. The little thing has such a solid lineup.

@zerodeefex When you realize you could have gotten a nintendo switch with zelda and mario odyssey......instead of a Yggdrasil A2 upgrade LOL. I miss my gaming days T_T .

I just got a switch a month ago with Mario, Zelda and Octopath. Its the first console I've bought since an Xbox 360 back in 2005. I'm absolutely loving it and with Zelda in particular it's the most fun I've had gaming that I can remember.

Really? Who didn't like it? The steam reviews are "very positive" and I think adventuregamers.com named it game of the year at some point. Maybe I'll discover some faults further in the game but for me it feels very much like a modern take on King's Quest, I have no complaints about the atmosphere.

As for switch I highly recommend Hollow Knight, it's such an amazing side scroller. Probably the best metroidvania type game I've ever played and that's saying something. I played it on the PC but should be a really good fit for the switch. Quite hard in places but rewarding.

I have been playing the Zelda games since they came out in the 80's. This latest on the switch is by far the best yet.

Currently playing Salt and Sanctuary.... damn this game evokes that Dark Souls frustration like no other 2D game I have played in a long time.

I have Hyper Light Drifter on the que to play after Salt N Sanctuary.

    I hate Salt and Sanctuary.

On one hand, the overall theme and design do feel like Dark Souls, even replicate the somewhat clunky combat. It is a metroidvania with no platforming, but for Dark Souls imitation it's not exactly a downside.

But other aspect of the game feels... weird. The skill tree looks springload and confusing, but somehow they offer multiple level-up time within the same attributes, while that attributes is not even unique, there're the several ones in other branch that you can upgrade too. The multiple currency is pretty much a gimmick. The stats checking + upgrading UI is not very intuitive, i can't understand the stat number and why it differentiates when equip and unequip it.

What break the game for me is... bosses. For a Souls game, good boss fights is quintessential. What i experience in SnS boss fight is that there're not many attack variants when it come to the bosses. What make it worse is that when the attack isn't so numerous and not that difficult, they just add the second phase that bring nothing new to the table except speed up the attack animation. And while faster bosses is not exactly a bad thing, i mean Hollow Knight or Dead Cells got bosses that pretty fast on attack too, what seperate those game from SnS is the fluidity: Hollow Knight freedom in movement open up a lot of strategy when it come to dodging, Dead Cells weapon synergy and much smoother movement make boss encounter much more fair (Note: Dead Cells bosses is pretty interesting because same as SnS, they do have 2nd phase with faster speed, but other than the first bosses Concierge, others do have different attack). Most of the time i died because of the boss faster phase, and i survived because i packed more health potion. You don't need much skill as long as you can grind to get more potion, and with that skill tree i'm sure you can get alot.

So yeah, i don't like it. I'm still mad that i spent almost 10 hours playing it and can't refund anymore. If you need 2D Souls-like, i'd recommend Hollow Knight and Dead Cells instead (eventhough i don't think any of those two is... as Souls-like as Salt and Sanctuary is)

Is anyone else irritated at Nintendo's new online service? I am. Now if their service was close to on par with Sony's or Microsoft's, $35 for a family plan would be an easy pill to swallow...

Splatoon 2 is still going to run peer to peer for online play, and never through a Nintendo operated server. That is bullshit right there. That's paying $35 for zero benefit. Luckily Mario Cart, will eventually get server support.

Come on Nintendo, be better then that!!!

Nintendo is remarkably similar to Apple, in the sense that they care more about getting new customers as once they have them, they're locked in pretty hard and can get away with some fairly shady customer service. This is why they market their game systems so heavily and hang on to their exclusives and IP with a death grip, and have a squad of lawyers that puts Scientology's to shame.

If this is a surprise to anyone, just check out their points system to get an idea - Buy anywhere between 20 and 100 games, get 1 free! Also those reward points only last a year.

    ... I'm still buying a Switch tho.

I love Nintendo but we have a platonic relationship and that's all I'm expecting in return.

I've logged about 7-8 hours on Super Mario Party at this point between last night and this morning and overall it is exactly what I was hoping for. Solid mini games, nothing too gimicky with the motion controls, more classic board gaming, a bit of stategy with the new ally feature. Still shows screens and animations for a beat too long for my tastes which makes the concept of a quick game impossible, but I'm not very patient. I do like that you can jump straight into playing the mini games without any unlocks. There are a number of modes different from the classic boards that make it easy to mix the experience up. Very satisfied with this entry. So far the Switch has been a fantastic buy.

Heads up this Humble Monthly has Hollow knight and a few other games as the early unlock bonuses (and you get more games at the end of the month).

You can subscribe for $12, then immediately cancel automatic renewal, and still get full benefits.

Games are giftable if you already own a copy via Steam, and you can set it so all the proceeds go to various Charities so you can guilt free spend on it too!

I really loved the Witcher 3 (bloody baron was outstanding and many other quests too) and did so much shit immersing myself into that well written and designed (also audio) world until some time old characters return in a meaningful way regarding the main quests. It completely took me out now because I skipped Witcher 2 and only played 1 over 10 years ago. I can't relate and care (stage play quest) about them. Kinda took me offguard. Forcing myself through the stage play now. Maybe I should watch extensive Witcher 1+2 summaries.

@Golmang While I love W1 and W2 they don't tie into W3 all that well, it's better to just play W3 on its own merit and leave it at that. W3 is an epic all by itself. Also... Yennefer is your main and only true love and don't you ever forget that :D

The Bloody Baron is the craziest quest ever in a game. No other game ever game me such emotion like the Witcher 3.

I agree, it could have been made into a whole separate game. It was haunting, like an old forgotten fairy tale, full of regret, sorrow and horror. It was the turning point for me after the dry starting region. That's where I realized what a rare gem Witcher III is and fantastically written. Also: Johnny! What a mysterious little creature.

Now I just gotta find my way back into it again.

The Bloody Baron was a solid dark story and definitely the highlight of Act I, but IMO it rather pales compared to the main quest of Hearts of Stone (the first major expansion). If you finished the main story of W3, you owe it to yourself to experience it. Let’s just say that when it starts, it won’t seem like much more than a vanilla contract. Then it gets wild.

Finished playing all the King's Quest episodes. It's a fantastic game but I also have some mixed feelings, let's see here:

Episode1: Absolutely fantastic, A++. Everything you could ask for in a King's Quest game.

Episode2: Not bad but feels very constrained compared to Episode 1. The execution is good but the scope is quite small and it definitely feels like a set piece. B+

Episode3: Now this is more like it. Epic feel, fun characters, tough choices. Not much of an adventure game but nice storytelling and very enjoyable. A+

Episode4: What is this? A puzzle game? Am I playing tetris? There's some kind of story in there but this is obviously a set-piece. If you love puzzle games and don't care about story this is the episode for you. I love that they included a Sphinx but that's not going to save them. C average.

Episode5: Very sentimental, yes it's a send-off I get it, but why does it have to be so depressing? Why has the Kingdom gone to crap in his dreams? Couldn't he have fun and positive dreams about his own legacy? Is the story really made better by everything going down the drain? I don't want to spoil the episode completely but I do think it hits a little too close to real life. I don't really play video games to experience the pain of the real world, rather it's to have fun and gain a new perspective on things. And where the *F* is that dragon? The story is cute and well told for what it is but at best this is a 'B average'.

    Overall: B +

If you're a King's Quest and adventure game fan I absolutely recommend this 100%. It's funny, the graphics are fantastic and some parts of the story are absolutely wonderful. Then on the other hand there are some parts of the story that feel almost out of place and some parts are quite depressing to tell the truth. But definitely worth a play-through.

Many a real street fight happened because of this game way back in the days of yore, hahahhaaaaaa.

EDIT: The $299 price tag included shipping to my door
