I quit acquiring hi-res with exception of Reference Recordings - but those use Pacific Microsonics converters at 176K and engineering has given great attention to details.
@atomicbob Recording Quality > Bitrate. I did find some of the RR stuff to be boring, but I did enjoy Trittico from the 90s. I found that CD for a $1 in the junk bin.
Oh yeah, @atomicbob what are some of the more musical RR stuff that's been out for awhile? Not a classical snob, but I do enjoy it if it's musical to me.
If the hi-res has a unique mastering that is good, I go for it. If a CD has superior mastering to any hi-res version of an album, I go for the CD. IMO people who listen to digital should use both unless their DAC only handles 16/44.
Amen, all about the mastering. I only buy "hi-res" when it's an edition that I couldn't get cheaper on CD. At the end of the day, a well-mastered version is what makes the biggest difference.
