I have a Gear Watch 4, but I bought it really for just two apps, Strava (for cycling) and Golf Pad (for...you know), both of which are cross platform. I know from others they work great on Apple hardware as well.
If you're serious about fitness, the integration with the iPhone and the wealth of health data is amazing (and a bit scary). No apps needed, it's all built into Fitness/Health. Disclaimer: I don't use sleep apps, they may suck.
Only thing I have ever noticed about the Apple watch is people who have them complaining about the battery life. I'm keeping my Polar and 2 weeks of battery life.
I have a 6 SE and can go two full days without charging. I have no issues charging every night like my phone and getting through one day is no problem. Older models struggled to get through a day but not anymore.
I moved away from the Apple watch to a Garmin watch because PCAP touch displays don't work in the rain. My primary use case is outdoor running, trail running, and hiking in the PNW. Setting up trail running courses in Gaia GPS and importing them to my watch is my "can't live without".
I'm with @Vansen . Since I got pretty serious about running, wanted a smart watch with Strava and internal music storage so I could run without a huge phone strapped to my arm. Started with the Galaxy S4, which was okay, but battery life was pitiful so returned it for a Garmin. Love all the fitness data, maps, super accurate GPS, and 5-day+ battery life.
If you don’t care about sleep tracking then the battery life and charging each night shouldn’t be too much of a nuisance with the Apple Watch. I use a Fitbit Charge 5 bc my primary use case is tracking exercise which is 90% done in my home gym. And bc it’s super light with a week of battery life.
