I have used Apple iPhones for ten years (getting a new one every year) without a hitch. I find them so reliable and their Customer service is beyond reproach...When calling them you actually get some one whose native language is English...quite a concept!

Each person's experience with the Cult of Apples is expected to fall within a certain range of tolerances regardless of geographic location because they pride themselves on running a tight ship, and if one finds themselves in a position where they are able to change phones every year then it makes sense that they don't encounter the various problems that come with rocking an older make for an extended period of time. Yes I believe planned obsolecence is a thing, which pisses me off on account of how heavily these things rely on rare earth metals and how many phones and computers end up junked rather than recycled.

Insofar as the first part of your post goes, I had no reason for complaint. The last quip about native English speakers was just dickish though.

Why...because you like Windows products and trying to decipher a technical problem through an Indian of Philippino accents?

Larry, IDGAF about the accent (I'm from New Zealand, so good luck understanding me on the phone) as long as the staffer is competent - and I think there are grounds for criticism there whoever is the manufacturer.

    1. You are human garbage

    2. Apple has centers in the Philippines. Everyone has centers in the Philippines. It's the only place you get English speakers who have enough cultural context for the US + such a large pool of people with technical degrees that you can get consistently high quality support.

    In summary: go f**k yourself

I still think poorly of myself for how I handled another situation where someone talked about Filipinos (that's the proper spelling btw, confusing I know) in a pretty appalling way, so I'm going to be less sensitive right now because I'm afraid of letting my biases affect how I treat other people.

That said, there's a difference between companies cheaping out and hiring CSRs who can't manage a passable accent because it saves companies a few thousand pesos (please believe me when I say I find dealing with people who affect fake accents just as cringe-worthy as you do) and ragging on someone for not having been born to an English-speaking community, as if hiring someone from India, the Philippines, or any other country where English isn't the native tongue to help people in countries that are primarily English-speaking is somehow shameful.

I'm no economist but know enough about how outsourcing jobs like these make sense when all you're worried about is making as large a profit as possible. Too much to get into right now but Googling is free. For what it's worth, in my experience the service at PowerMac stores around here has been quite good, and they don't really default to speaking English.

Honestly I've had an absolutely shit couple months and was forced to take a break from school because I fucked up, so I hate the world right now. Taking a break. Sorry to everyone for kicking the hornet's nest or whatever the idiom is.

    P.S.
I like Windows machines more than Macs, true, but that's more a matter of cost and convenience for me; I'd make the switch to Linux if I were more tech savvy. Everyone else in my sizeable family is on iPhones and Macs though. To each their own.

Oh! I thought this was going to be about another Larry! That might have been interesting.
Kick away, and cease apologising for yourself! Very sorry to hear of your setbacks. I hope it is only temporary. Looking forward to better news.

I've ran a few offshore tech support teams based in India.. come on man don't be a dick. This is usually the only source of stable income for the whole family. My employees would bus in from a rural area outside Bangalore for two hours each way to start at 11pm. Most of the techs I had were better than the american counterparts by a long shot.

There was so many good people there just trying to provide for 3 generations of family and all you see is someone with a bad accent. Where is the ban hammer !?

The really thick Indian accent thing is a relic of the past when US call centers were starting to get outsourced. Think early 2000s, or earlier. Companies got wise to this very quickly (customers complained) as I don't think I've ever reached someone I had difficulty understanding - that is having to ask someone to repeat something to me mulitple times - since 2003. Also, English programs have accelerated massively in Asia. Ones taught by native English speakers from the Anglo countries get top dollar.

As far as Filipino accents - absolutely no problem with me understanding. There definitely is one, but I figured the intertwined relationship between America and the Philippines has facilitated the mutual intelligibility of "standard" American English and Filipino accented English. Haha, I know Filipino-Americans who can speak both. American English in more professional settings and Filipino-English in the home environment (usually with the wife, because the kids always seem to be embarrassed). Those who are bilingual definitely understand how how his code-switching works. My English is different with my parents. My wife's English stays the same standard American, so there is always a misunderstanding between her and my mom. (My wife is American, so she cannot code-switch, and my mom's "Engrish" is particularly funny).

I can't imagine anyone living in California, and doing business in California consulting for industrial manufacturing not being able to understand Indian or Filipino accented English.

Perhaps Larry is one of those few true Americans: his ancestors, all speaking proto-English, having originated in the Colorado River basin, before the time of Spartacus.

@Larry Megugorac. I have rarely replied to ignorant people on this forum or on Changstar. I’m I not going to start now . I’m making an exception. I wish you luck interacting with the 7.2 billion other humans in the world.

By the way, you got off easy with @zerodeefex.

@Lyer25. Hang in there. Life gives you gifts. Then it shits on you. Then you get more gifts. You are a great member of this forum, and IMHO a great person. I hope we can meet face to face someday. I’ll buy the drinks.
