    Yes!! I think this started happening with the rise of crumple zones, rounded fronts and corners, and high rears for injury avoidance (and consequent manufacturer lawsuit avoidance). My last two cars have been a hatchback and a wagon, so it's obvious where the back is - but my parking is shit because I can't see the corners and I can't see the front. On my first car, a 1972 Triumph 2000, every extremity was visible from the driving position so parking was a doddle. Sure, all the edges were pretty sharp, but I knew if they were going to hit something. Give me good visibility and good brakes over squishable boundaries any day.

    This is why I try to get lower-end trims on cars since I don't need all that extra electronic crap, and my eyes tells me the truth more than cameras and junk. However, modern cars are still full of electronics...meh.

    Heh. No, indeed. One particular episode, downhill with a loaded trailer approaching a T-junction overlooking a drop, still makes me sweat when I think of it. Did you mod the handbrake mount on any of yours? Very weakly riveted to the centre tunnel.

    We could fill a whole thread with the mechanical shortcomings of the T2000/2500.

    My winter daily driver / long hauler, 2005 Chrysler 300C, 5.7L hemi with 102k miles. Gets about 23mpg:

    My summer daily driver, 1968 Dodge Polara 4 door hardtop. Original 383 big block with 190k miles, added factory 69 4 barrel intake and an Edelbrock 1406. Factory manifolds to dual exhaust. She'll lay patch and sounds amazing but isn't fast by any means lol. Gets about 13 mpg on the freeway at 80mph, gets 10 or less around town.

    Sorry, I was unclear. I had a Spitfire, a TR7 and a GT6. I've lost track of how many brake and clutch cylinders I rebuilt. Much fun when the clutch goes. You learn to park it facing downhill until the rebuild kits arrive. Then you learn to always have a rebuild kit on hand.

    I would argue that Michelotti was as good as any of his peers. A GT6 still does it for me, one of the most beautiful cars ever

    @ergopower , yep, clutch master cylinder. On such a POS, why did the clutch need to be hydraulic?? Still, ultimately much less hassle than all the universal joints I had to replace. And the overhead gear, holy shit...

    Yeah I think that's the main reason and given the way many people drive, the pedestrians of the world are probably safer as a result. I do wonder however if at least some of it is in the pursuit of improving exterior aesthetics at the expense of practical functionality in the name of selling more cars...

    As you say, front and corners are the main issue with a hatchback, but even rear visibility in our current 1 series is much worse than the old E87 116i sport we owned back in the UK for a couple of years:

    Also, the old E87 was infinitely much more involving to drive than the new F40 116d we have now. Part of it is that our E87 was manual rather than auto (they no longer offer manual on any BMW model here in Turkey), but add to that the move away from RWD (at least for the 1 series), increasingly soulless emissions-restricted engines and the switch from hydraulic power steering to electric.

    Honestly, if it were up to me, I'd get myself an E87 130i M-sport with manual box and without the crappy electric steering option and enjoy the straight six hatchback goodness until I could no longer buy petrol for it.

    Not technically a car, but just for completeness here is the final bike I owned back in my 20s before my Mrs banned 2-wheeled transport for 'safety reasons':

    Well, call me crazy if you'd like but the truth was that nowadays I no longer use my car for fun spirited driving, plus I needed something that I could attach a surf board to so I decided to get something more comfortable and practical but with the same level of luxury. In other words I got myself a Jaguar I-Pace SE:

    I'm vain like that so it actually took a lot of work to find one with an acceptable trim and equipment level and most importantly: a non-boring colour. Luckily I managed to find this Firenze red which I think is stunning.

    It's from 2019 with 45k km (28k miles), and at this point in my country they're going for about half the original price, hooray for early depreciation!

    I've had it for about a week now (still waiting on the company to come install a wallbox at my garage, thus the photo at a fast charger) and I'm actually surprised at how much I've been enjoying it. It doesn't corner like a proper sports car of course but it's still surprisingly competent although I've found that the lack of nice engine noise means that, despite all that torque, I don't feel the impulse to drive fast.

    Yes, we put white vinyl back just like the original.

    Before. These holes went right through to the trunk, and leaked into the interior and soaked the carpet. My friend that sold it to me patched the floor holes and put new carpet in before I bought it.

    Some of the "metal" that came off when we pulled out the back window. This was basically the entire lower right corner of the window ledge.

    Some of the holes we patched. The corners were particularly bad and got filled with Bondo shortly after patching so I didn't take pictures of those.

    The day we glued on the new vinyl. We used an entire gallon of Weldwood contact adhesive, so it's not going anywhere.

    The day we put in the back window. This was after 2 days of trimming the vinyl, gluing down the edges and installing all the stainless trim.

    A piece of the original vinyl top that was under the trim, Pearl White Boar. Only Legendary Interiors had this material and they wanted 3x what I paid for the Bright White Elk. This Pearl White needs constant care or it will lose its shine, so I decided to change it up slightly.

    The Fit has DD duty. The 295 rears are for hunting fresh tarmac, in a safe sex kind of way.

    When I bought my first car here, a small hatchback, the salesman tried to sell me add-on reversing aids. I told him, "It's a small car. And I can drive!" Years later, my current car comes with a very unsophisticated reversing-distance alarm. And you know what? I use it! And the time I told it "don't be silly," I backed into a tree stump :D

    My car has a rear camera that I only used 25% of time. Most of the time it is easier for me to just turn my neck.

    I remember the days where we didn't have all this tech just in a car and to be a safe driver you need to be smart, not rely on gadgets.

    @Zimmer266 Oh dude I wanna ask how much you are getting rapped on the excise tax on that sucker.

    Essentially, my first gf. She needs new tires soon though (track days will necessitate frequent tire changes). No modifications; she has a removable roof, the stock LT4 engine (which is plenty in a car like this) and the old school manual.

    Edit: realized I missed @rhythmdevils original post saying why I like it. This is more of a case of what I don't like about it: the trunk lining is ultra-smooth and anything in there will slide around like mad even under the most gentle G forces. Other than that, I like pretty much everything else: it drives extremely well (actually quite comfortable and well-behaved in regular driving), handles very well on the tracks, and has enough power to make me feel nervous.

    Yes, it has downsides, but to be honest, anyone who has real complaints about a car like this should be looking at something else
