@m17xr2b claims that this is indeed the case, citing a conversation between himself and A. Grell; it was stated that the production versions of Sennheiser's HD580/600/650 are all gimped by less-than-ideal materials implemented for the sake of saving on production costs. IIRC he also has an HD690 he's willing to put out on loaner too— I'd love for his and @Maxx134's mods to go head to head in a blind-test death match.

Well, @famish99 is currently next to me listening to the HD690s on the Stellaris, I'll let him describe them.

I did lots of damping mods on 650s and 600s. They make them sound different than stock, but the major flaw for me was that the damping mods dried out the reverb trails and spatial character a bit too much for me. I eventually landed on the stock 600 with stock cable as well.

If you are up for a journey try some mods, otherwise be happy with stock. And no I did not like the coin mod.

    Not what Im looking for.
The future is what Im talking about. It is terrifying to many, that a custom mod can make and put high end headphones to shame, but it is inevitable.
We must raise the bar in this industry thats bleeding our pockets...

Actually the graph is stretched but what it actually sounds like is more punch/slam and good mids and trebles. Overall more lively sound than the 650.

This one is a bit brighter than neutral but not in trebles & the bass still nice.
Not harman target sounding at all.

Cleaning the sound can give an apparent increase in resolve, but I compared to stock and it is easily noticable an increase in resolve.
I would like to put that one up against the th900.
I have other more resolving headphones like the Denon series as well.

Yes thats why I show the CSDs which blatantly show elimination of ringing.

    CSDs will always show ringing.
Variation can be at slightly different frequencies, but ringing will always show, regardless which measurement system used.

The answer is yes, the HD6xx series has uptapped potential.

    This is true.
Yet I was told in past mini-meets, that I need measurements as well...
Listening in the mini-meets wasn't enough.

So the correct answer is, we need BOTH.
Observation to back up data, is the way science is proven.

I am open to take donor headphones to mod.

Kiss mod proves it can be cleaned up in sound, but more can be done, like reduce resonances and faster decay to .5ms instead of 1ms shown in other CSDs.

This is very true and most noted in the baffle area.

Wow 690 must be old version right?
No problem to send mine over.

That's not how this works, in my opinion. You make claims, and want to sell modified headphones, then mod one that garners interest (not the 580) and do a loaner so people potentially interested can do direct comparisons. The HD6XX can be had for $150 if you're patient. You're making very wild claims about how you're revolutionizing mods on the HD650 and then barely give any info on how you modded and offer a half broken 580 for a loaner, don't be surprised when people don't take you too seriously.

Maxx I wouldn't mind offering up an old HD650 for you to mod. Or m17xr2b if he doesn't mind it coming from the States. It has the silver drivers, but I think it was the 2nd "silent revision" around 2009-ish? Not sure if that matters or not for your mods. My newest HD650 pairs doesn't exhbit that so-called "Sennheiser veil", definitely clearer and more open sounding.

Actually, I want to sell the mod as intellectual info.
I do not have interest or time in making, what would amount to thousands of HD6xx out there.
This is more than a mod, it is a revolution .

    I totally agree.
It is wild and revolutionary and you don't have to believe even with my measurements backing it up.

Nevertheless I stand by my assertions that I can do what I can do.
If I were bluffing it would end here.
    I am not bluffing.
I am not a fool either.
    This is my intellectual property.

PM me and tell me exactly how you would like your 650 FR to look & sound.

    I agree.
There's no rush with me. I would do that one.
Tell me exactly how you would like the FR to be so to make it challenging for me.

I can see why @m17xr2b is anti HD800 now, these "690" are the closest I've heard a 650 to HD580 tonality (which I also heard today), but with most of the resolving power of the 800. It made my modded 6xx sound boomy in the bass and overdamped up top by comparison.

@Maxx134 I shouldn't need to tell you what I want it to sound like. You're claiming its a revolution, get a cheap used hd6xx, mod it to sound as best as YOU think you can, then do a loaner. I'll happily participate, compare it to my HD6XX Kiss modded and give honest feedback.

@Maxx134 how about just shipping it to one of the prolific moderators here first? Would be good to get measurements on a better-known rig. I'm sure Marv or Hands would give no-bullshit feedback. If you want this to become a big thing, their impressions are important to this community as well as the masses who come here for honest information. We know where they stand on the Senns as-is, so it's a solid point of reference.

    Ok,I I will look for a used 6xx or 650.

In meantime I will still keep the 580 up for loaner.

I would like to see the hd690 FR so I could see how it looks if possible.

No FR is possible since I don't have any sort of equipment nor the experience for measurements.

Trying to get @m17xr2b to make me a pair. I could potentially loan them to some of the staff members.

Well... the opposite direction, which is this: (bass is like 1.8dB over 1KHz, whatever that means)

...kinda sounds a bit too safe IMO. Good-ish as a reference, though.

Here's CSD as well in case that made you curious:

Anyways, just for academic purposes, etc... I don't think this mod is very interesting so I won't release it. But just to say... I think there is some merit to making a more V-shaped HD650.

If nothing else, then to see what it might sound like and maybe add to the headstage a bit? Yeah I can see that, haha, okay I take that bit back (esp considering my preference in headphones :D). I'd be lying if I said those measurements don't make me curious by the way— I think there's always a place for "too safe" cans, so I wouldn't be mad if you found the time to post instructions somewhere :p (Only if not too inconvenient though)

Okay I have an hd650 incoming, and will have that done after Christmas.
    :)

Ok, so from that description it would seem that the 690 unit would be less bass than 650, and closer to a 600 in the top end, with more clarity or openness than the 650, correct?
    Can post any pictures?
    I never heard of a 690 before.

I would say the moded 580 loaner has a more of an impactful bass, while retaining the brighter trebles of the 600, yet more mids.
    Not distant or close.

The "690" is a modded 650; it definitely flattens the midbass bump of the 650 turning the sound more tonally neutral down low and up high, but not quite as full in the lower mids as the 580 is. It has better mid details than the 580 by far.

    I didn't take any pictures.
