Yep. My wife doesn’t understand this and thinks I’m neurotic, but prefer even to run appliances like the dishwasher while I’m sleeping so don’t have to hear it during the day. Ironic since she spends all day with our energetic daughter. :)
Meaningful silence is a bit of a proper luxury where I live, so yeah a bit of that now and again would be enjoyable. Kinda makes sense that ANC is taking off with the world moving in the direction it's been but you wish it were unneeded.
An exception to my noise fatigue/silence appreciation is the noises of nature. Rain, birds, wind, waves, frogs and crickets... the sound of these is not as exhausting for me as the sounds of humankind. Perhaps its our evolutionary history with 99% spent in small communities in nature, not noisy urban jungles where many of us, myself include, now live.
@Stuff Jones I have a real thing for the sound of rain during the day, particularly lighter rain. When my cat was alive (d. 2008), that was our cue to take the day off and nap together. And, to this day, I honor that tradition whenever possible.
I'm greying about the muzzle and enjoy the sounds of nature. We lived in the city for 26 years before moving to the country. Quiet is a way of life here.
My wife can’t stand silence, I love it. It’s so wonderful being at home when nobody else is there. And sometimes just sitting there and doing nothing at all, so that the silence also enters my thoughts.
Thankfully, my wife nowadays often uses her iPad and AirPods, so the TV isn’t constantly running anymore.
@zottel My wife wants a TV, but I refuse to have one in my house. Not because of the noise, (I hadn't thought of that; so, thank you for giving me another reason,) but because I know she has a tendency to waste her soul on "entertainment." And, also, the activities of daily life are distracting enough, and I don't want another thing distracting us from each other.
