If you haven't yet looked into it, you can probably find some very nice older Breguet's with the Roman numeral dials for about as much. Maybe a bit too dressy though.

    Pretty.

I, too, am a one-watch guy. This arrived in 1982.

The steel Cartier Tanks apparently are quite durable daily watches. Cartier watches indicate one thing in particular: discrete taste.

One of my best friends has a Tank "made in Paris". The Cartier Tank or the JLC Reverso are end-game if you ask me regarding watches. So much watch in such a discrete form...

Well, I've put nearly 40 years on my watch, and the first few of those were as an active, fairly careless teenager (I'd saved enough to buy an ok used car, but I spent the money on a watch and an Apple II and kept riding the bus instead). I've had to replace the crystal twice -- maybe I should've bought a Reverso -- and I've replaced the band around half a dozen times, but I wear the thing every day.

I'm sort of amazed that in all that time I've never accidentally stepped into the shower or jumped into a pool with it on, or spilled a drink on it, or even splashed my wrist while washing my hands -- the one fragility that this model has is that it isn't even water-resistant, let alone waterproof.

That's very cool. I've been thinking about picking up the NASA one for jogging.

I'd get into independent watchmaking. Then you won't have the spare money to be thinking about cars :)

Do any of you own a timegrapher and regulate your watches yourself? Most of you have watches far nicer than my frankensteins and likely send them out for service, but just curious about experiences. I'm toying with getting one, but at the same time want to sell all my DIY efforts and get a single "nice" watch.

Yep, but you have to be careful in how you use it or you won't get the desired results. Since watches run differently depending on position, you can't just plop a watch on the timegrapher and set it to 0/day (with the dial down). The best way is to just wear the watch for a few days, see how much you've gained/lost and then use the timegrapher to adjust the watch accordingly.

For example, I wear a watch for 5 days, store it at night face up, and then see that it's lost 14sec/day. I put it on the timegrapher and see that it is -5sec/day face down, so I adjust it to +9sec/day on the timegrapher for a total change of +14/day. If I wear the watch now, then I should be close to 0/day on wrist.

FWIW, I always set my target on-wrist to +5/day... I hate it when my watch is behind. It also makes it easy to reset the time if you're running fast (with a hacking watch)... just pull the stem out...

Watchcheck is the app I use to check how the watch is running on-wrist

Seiko is releasing an improved SNK with manual wind movement. I should not want one, but I really liked my old SNK809. Too bad it didn't have manual wind...

$275 and still no sapphire. I do like the new size, though. Of the older gen, the 42mm I have is a little too big, but the 37.5mm looks a little silly. Might be the balance between case and face or something. At any rate, I have liked the looks of a lot of their updates, but the pricing with just minor bump ups in specs has me questioning the value.

Admittedly this is colored by my brief interlude with watch modding where I put sapphire crystals and NH35 movements in all my Seikos.

The hardlex is not the worst part for me. It is the price.

For a about 150 to 200 Dollars/Euros retail you can find this and it beats most beater watches on the current market except the G-Shock Tough Solars.

I have one as a daily. It beats the SKX for me, has Solar-quartz and the rubber strap out-of-the-box is comfortable. Not the terrible Seiko thingy that came standard on so many watches.

For 200 Euros/Dollar retail the new Seiko fieldwatch is okay value. Meanwhile Citizen still kicks more ass with its tougher eco-drive watches.

P.S. Yes I had to have the blue one.

The trick with those Seiko straps is to bend them into an arc in a mug full of hot water. Obviously without the watch attached at the time. Works a treat.
