Nah, I'm being fired and will be training my replacements, contractors in India. I was basically the lowest value on a spreadsheet, the decision was made so far above me that my boss and I had planned out my goals and new responsibilities already. I'm still kinda in shock right now.
That stinks. One company I know went through this process only to learn the hard way the difference between applications programmers and real-time embedded systems programmers. Many of the former available cheaply around the world. Far fewer of the latter and command higher income for a reason. Doesn't help when the project manager doesn't know the difference.
Yeah, the SVP I'm under really burned me here. I'm really not in a good place right now, mentally. I've got some interview oppertunities, and my boss and my director are working to help me get a new position, but this really hurt. 5 years man, and this is how I leave?
@atomicbob - The problem here is I'm kind of the human impedance matching between the ugly system underneath and the customer support guys. I handle things that don't technically show up as capitalized. Basically, I supports millions in revenue and profit, but my salary looks like a drag on the spreadsheets.
Corporate life just fucks you over sometimes and leaves you burnt. This sucks ass, but given your experience and the support of your boss outlook seems great? People high up the ladder don't often have their head on straight for things like this, it's stupid. Best of luck though!
Is the "making you train your replacements" thing uncommon practise?
Too far up the chain often has no appreciation for how things actually get done. It isn't until the system breaks drastically that they even care ... often long after bonus payouts and persons responsible have moved on leaving some new higher ups with the problems. Hopefully this is an opportunity for a much better position for you.
@Smitty, really sorry to hear this. It just sucks. Not much else to say.
According to me, a lot of modern management thinking is just crap, but it was an evil day when someone thought of dividing a company into cost centers and profit centers. Like just working together wasn't good enough?
All I can encourage with, is... that after a couple of years of increasing angst and decreasing morale among many, the end, when it came, was one of the best things that ever happened to me, and took me to new and unexpected things in life. After 11 years in the job.
