It's strange: applying sound damping material to the inner wall of the back of HE6SE V1 muffles highs in vocal Nov 29, 2023 at 1:02 PM

It's like there really are 2 types of Elex pads, the softer ones present some metallic sheen while the stiffer ones hardly have that.

The softer ones are really softer and squishy, one press and it's all the way to the bottom. The stiffer ones have this slight initial strength against pressing, then there are soft as well. It's like linear mechanical keyboard switches vs tactile ones...

Did yours have the soft ones originally?

Well, I happened to get two pairs recently, so one pair has softer pads and the other pair has stiffer ones. I wouldn't compare them if I didn't buy the latest bunch of Elex pads on Drop, and saw people complaint about soft inferior pads they received (and there's only one pad in the package).

It's not that much of difference, but if I pay attention, it's there.

HD6XX K, take off its grills and the foam pieces behind the drivers, put on HD265 cups and a layer of TP. Closed HD600 completed, somehow.

@gixxerwimp Nah... really not good at serious comparisons... Plus I want to experiment some cheap protein leather pads on it. Now with HD6XX OG pads, this closed-back HD6XX sounds like lower mids recessed, hallower HD600. It's OK, I wouldn't complain, it's much less V-shaped than TH-X00. But switching back to HD600 / HD650 makes me appreciate the fullness of their sound.

In any case, once you get it sorted out, I'm sure others would be interested in your findings. So please do share :D

SDR + Anaxilus + Dekoni sheepskin pads + 1 layer of facial mask material makes my HD800 sound warm, bassy and closed back. This is strange.

@Lyander Yep, I admit it sounds too warm now, as I was shocked at beginning. But about comfort, I feel the pads are a bit too thick as they squash my face a bit... OK I have a big head... I'm going to buy some thinner leather pads to compare.

Hmm, thinking that squishing the pads more might actually help? Compress the stuff inside so it's not as wub-wub-wub, but I've not got a large head so limited capacity to compare. Curious whether that'd affect sound a lot now, huh.

Just check the price here, about $15 so it's a must do (I'm in China). I don't like the dust shield cloth inside the Dekoni pads either, as it touches my ears. But those cheap thinner Chinese pads don't have the cloth so they look perfect for me. Btw, I don't really want to squish the Dekoni pads as they use memory foam, don't want to let them memorize the squishing pain.

So weird, swapping ear pads between HE5SE and HE5 (2017) will make both of them sound better to me...

Really lucky on modding HE5, midrange got even smoother while I was trying to boost bass a bit. Now I need a durable solution.
