Well, yeah, I'm with you on that. I don't really care what others think of my music. But I must admit to a certain snobishness that makes me embarrassed to like things vanilla ice, lol.
At the ZMF booth in CanJam last year, it was 2 systems hooked up to one source, so me and the guy next to me had to share. The look on his face when I put on "Was Ist Hier Los?" by Eisbrecher was absolutely priceless (I probably don't fit the demographic he has in mind for people who listen to German industrial; I'm an Asian boy).
lol I know who Eisbrecher are. In the early 2000's I was embarrassed to listen to progressive house because I lived in a place where as someone put it, "only gays listen to house." In a mortifying moment, I requested a house track at my sr prom and everyone left the dancefloor. Since moving to LA I'm not embarrassed about any musical tastes though, every flavor has a place here.
The two closest I guess I could say would be Swift and Eilish. Because my daughter made me listen to them so goddamn much that I enjoy them now. But I give less of a shit as I got into my 30s.
Nah, if I like music then I think it's good and that's all I have to think about it, I don't even get the concept of guilty pleasure music. So you listen to it and like it but you think it sucks, or you think other people think it sucks? too much thinkng about what other people think.
Growing up as a youngster in the 80's I was introduced to Italo/Euro Disco from my Cantonese friends in Vancouver, I grew up next to "Chinatown". The driving synth beats and silly lyrics still put a smile on my face to this day.
As a balding, middle aged man it has to be rap music. My wife hates it, so I have to listen to it in secret. On airpods while working out, fixing the house, gardening etc. Mostly 90s plus some newer stuff like MF Doom. It’s my ‘getting shit done’ music. I don’t imagine they pictured some old white guy in his underpants swinging kettlebells when they were laying it down in the studio.
I agree completely, idgaf what anyone thinks of what I listen to. Your story about "Was Ist Hier Los?" by Eisbrecher reminds of when I went to Canjam Chicago in 2010. The Headamp booth had one source for multiple setups, and I had muted the other one and was listening to the black dahlia murder with the sr007 on the blue Hawaii. An older gentlemen walked up and started to grab the other headphones.
I paused the music and took off the sr007s and was like "you aren't gonna want to listen to this" he replied like "im sure it'll be fine", I shrugged and played the music again, you shoulda seen the look on his face, he promptly took them back off and walked away.
This reminded me of the time that the local hifi shop was playing infected Mushroom and Analog Pussy on some very expensive B&W 801 Speaker system, after the day was over. Oh the irony. Been fan of those bands ever since.
I wouldn't walk down the street wearing an "I Hate Indian Film Music" shirt. I don't want to be mobbed and deported! (especially if they discover that I hate cricket too!)
But, 99%, I do. And, as some may know already, I *love* Indian classical music.
