Why is piano so hard to get right? On many recordings, piano sounds slightly off from my rig. On some (few), it sounds great, mostly Jazz.

@AdvanTech Yes, I tried on speakers, too, but the best I have is a Dynaudio Music 5 smart speaker. Great sound, yes, but in terms of microdetail/plankton my headphone rig is far ahead. Tonality is sometimes nicer on the Dynaudio, but still, piano …

@RKML0007 Yes, that’s the thing: I play the piano myself, I know exactly what it should sound like. I did play the trumpet for a while, too, so there’s that. But then, I play acoustic guitar as well, and I love many recordings of that instrument. Same for drums, though good recordings are not so plenty there, and it requires really good and detailed equipment.

I guess you’re right, @Cellist88 . All those overtones are hard to capture. I wonder what a piano tuned for just intonation would sound like, at least in the key where that works, then. :)

I think it has to do with the fact that one often can’t tell if something is “supposed” to sound some way on a recording, and you don’t realize that something’s missing until you hear it on better gear. Once you hear the latter, the former’s flaws become obvious.

Not a musical term, but I'm a fan of the insulting "sitzpisser". Means what you think it means, a man who sits when he pisses. "Warmduscher", which is incidentally a London-based band, is also a fun insult, it lit means "warm showerer" but is used derisively to refer to what we would call a "wimp"

Another word we don't have that the Germans do that is more useful is "Fremdschämen" which lit means "strange shame [to be]" or the kind of embarrassment you feel when someone else makes an ass of themselves right in front of you, kinda the opposite of the popular Schadenfreude.

Not a big difference, but a bit less digitus, rounder, more air and plankton.
Unusable for > 48 kHz, though, audible clicks that are not there in the original.

Hehe, actually, I thought the same. It’s one of the very few recordings I remember from my teens where listening again with good hardware wasn’t like “Wow, I never heard all this then!”, but more like “Hm, I did’nt remember it sounded so bad …”
The remastered version from 2015 is actually quite a bit better (though not a revelation at all, too), and it contains the songs missing from the original soundtrack.

I really like the DunedIn Consort! I just placed an order for a few SACDs from them, including Bach's Magnificat. I also picked up their recording of Handel's Messiah as it's pretty cool hearing it with such a stripped back ensemble. Will contrast nicely with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir version I also picked up. :)

I’ve done a similar comparison with Pixies CDs I bought in the 90s vs Apple Music streams. Even though the streams are lossless, they are remastered and don’t have the same feel as the original. I definitely prefer the 90s discs

It depends. I think that the Michael Jackson remasters of Bad and Thriller are quite good, e. g.. They are louder, yes, but they don’t really lose anything (the originals didn’t have more dynamic contrast, anyway) and add some detail and separation.
OTOH, that’s 80s, not 90s, and from a time when digital production wasn’t common yet.

The amp’s probably not suitable for sensitive IEMs, though. Volume is controlled via discrete resistors at 32 levels + high/low gain, and the lowest level is probably too loud already. My preferred listening level with the Timeless is below 9 o’clock.
