From my notes the one Erroneous had sounded better to my ears than what Marv had. They had the same basic characteristics though. Sometimes 800s don't even have the same characteristics. It's not my fault or doing, 800s have just variation like that, and I work with what I'm given. But in both cases, I felt that I was able to do justice to the owner's preferences.

@ext1 I definitely understand. Each of the HD800s that have come through the house has been slightly different. I like my current pair with mods, but am super curious about yours after getting a JAR650.

@fraggler JAR650 was my #1 homie while the 800 was away being modded. It's just special. So good and I had let it go unused because JAR800, but man what a headphone.

@Gazny Hell naw man I could never afford that. I found a D-5000 for like 70% off retail, used and 6 years old.

how do you like the upsampling modes? Dsd seems interesting and is quite in vogue now.

@Gazny Haven't played with it too much yet. Did try max PCM and I preferred it at the native sample rate. Will do more testing.

@crenca Elrog rectifier, metal base Tung Sol 6550, and secret input tube (pm if you want info).

Not to be an ass about it, but did you guys check that those tubes wouldn't wear too heavily on the amp? IIRC the Supernaut's geared to work with one specific type, unless I'm misremembering.

I checked with Donald on the input tube and separately at the meet was assured the 6550 would be fine (and it is.)

I was and am quite fond of the Denon. The idea is to go from conical to microline and see the results. So far it's good, but not Earth shattering.

I recognize the new cart likely needs 50-100hrs burn in.

What tube does it take and what does it sound like?

Pretty sure there were 5654W tubes in it and it sounds relatively normal. It's still a $200ish amp so don't expect a miracle but it's nice for what it is.

Yea, not expecting a giant killer. Am more curious about the tonal nature. If it sounds straight or wet or dry or both wet & peaky (like Piety).
