Doesn't make much sense building speakers from the last available discontinued drivers. But there are some true gems out there! May 26, 2024

      Holy shit you were right.

Linear phase done properly is just another beast. For multidriver systems the difference is night and day, it's absurd. A completely different speaker, makes lr crossovers without phase correction almost unlistenable. I'm using brickwall crossovers with ringing at -90db, and iir for bass correction. Amazing stuff. Thanks!

Yes! 100% true minimum phase speaker! A good coaxial with phase compensation like what you did with kefs, or something like my setup that also destroys any thd and imd at the cost of complexity.

I'll reproduce your kef setup for another room, and do this phase treatment to all my other speakers. Once you go true minimum phase, no going back from that.

Also, I was thinking along the lines of, maybe 8th orger iir is too much, I'll try it with 2nd and 4th orders too. But I'm just blown away anyway

Short update. Tried it with 2, 4 and 8th orders.

2nd is the best sounding with least fatigue, but it's a marginal improvement. Fir is a galaxy wide difference.

Maybe I am misunderstanding, but you are practicing for a hearing test? Working to preserve your hearing is a worthy goal but I don't think the exams are intended to be a competition.

Measured Canton Reference 3K drivers in their enclosure. Not sure it's worth it making a new XO for the speaker.

I mean my dad asked me if it's feasible to make a new XO for it, so it's his decision, but we listened to the midrange by itself and while the FR (and bandwidth) are decent, it also didn't sound very resolving.
Also the stock XO is not that bad. Making a better one won't be cheap.

If you asked me: making a new speaker from scratch is 100X more fun. It is not like there is shortage of awesome drivers, some are even affordable. Only annoyance is cabinet.

Took a gamble on some HD600 hybrid pads off Amazon and I prefer them to the HE60 pads at least. My stock pads are ruined, but from memory I'd take them over the stock pads aswell.
Larger stage and still smooth FR, more bass impact.

@dasman66, very curious re: your impressions, especially re: any other Yggdrasil variants you've heard and how MIB sounds with the DSHA-3F and Clear + other headphones. Know you mentioned the SFD-1 DAC recently and some Metrum stuff, but the Yggdrasil gels so well with my speakers that I think I want to stay in Yggdrasil land.

We're in the process of moving to a new office and that system is all boxed up until after the week of Dec 4. Only other Yggdrasil I've had ears on was the LIM loaner... and that was awhile ago

Suspension didn't seem stiff at all, so I'm hoping for a low Fs coupled with low Mms (for a 21" woofer). Two in a RiPol might make for a lovely sub.

And is it really that useful to extend the cardioid-ness down low? With Hathor I can combine a ported bass with a cardioid widebander and get what I feel is a way better compromise. Omni at 20Hz transitioning to 10dB rear attenuation at 100Hz. Allowing good extension + efficiency from a relatively compact enclosure.

Checked with two chip-amps, GO2A and M4 headphone out. I doubt I'm clipping the amps at those levels. Is the HD600 magnet structure nearing its limits at those levels? And if so, is the AirPods Max' driver really that much more linear than the HD600?
