Any recommendations for a MacOS music player compatible with ALAC? I've found myself going back to my CD rips and iTunes is the worst. Dec 5, 2018 at 9:05 AM

Why do planar drivers sound so much less dynamic than moving coil drivers? Less excursion or displacement? Less rigid diaphragm material?

Would be curious if there is an indirect way to measure BL, suspension, damping, etc. of diaphragm at different excursion without laser inferometer.

I suppose at least the suspension stiffness needs to be assessed outside of optical and electrical means. Damping could be seen from transients. I will start taking hp engineering seriously when they show Klippel style analysis, lol.

IME Younger kids lean towards bass heavy stuff cuz modern music is bass-reliant. I know of some older folks (who may or may not have tinnitus) who prefer brighter cans because it lets them "hear" higher frequencies again.

I'll let you know in a few decades what I'm rocking :P

I love listening to terrible old recordings (e.g. "Back In The DHSS"/Trumption Riots EP by HMHB) on a decent chain. It was recorded on a portastudio above a chip shop, and sounds appalling, but the songs still shine through- and I can hear exactly how bad the recording and indeed the musical skills of the band were back then. I might be odd, though.

Also, a lot of things that just sound like a wall of mush on lesser gear resolve into their components more with decent gear, against expectations. Surely hearing more of the music is the object of the exercise?
