Agreed, most tubes are still available for a decent price. Its only a few tubes that have been hunted to the point of extinction, which have gone up in price. In most cases, price correlates more to rarity than actual sound.

American small signal tubes regularly went for between $0.50 and $1.00 in the 1950s. I was there. One online inflation calculator suggested they would be between $6 and $12 today. Wish I had stashed away some personal stock. Hindsight and all.

They said they knew their rectifiers and that would sound silly coming form anyone else. But he uses NOS tubes too, so i'm very curious. He has it in his WA33 with NOS driver tubes and says it completely changed the amp. I don't know specifics about sonic character though.

Is it electrically a “real” 5U4G, or is it like some of these other new production tubes (such as the Elrogs ) that are not in spec? If it is not the latter I will just order one and lone it out if it is worthy.

You have found synergistic combination with ortho IEMs and the TA-84. That is great. My preference is firmly HD800S and HD800 with mods which explains the interest in TA-66. I've yet to find an EL84 output system synergize as well as 6AS7 / 6080W OTL with HD800 family.

With the stock tubes the TA-84 is quite underwhelming (i.e., those Psvane tubes are absolute garbage). Rolling in some moderately decent tubes, and, at the gonzo end, rolling in some nice NOS 12AU7s, it stomps the TA-66, imho. And becomes more than a "just HD800" amp than the TA-66. Also, there was no good reason to include the ESS DAC; it does no favors.

@k4rstar i wonder though - during the "hey days" of tube amplification, today's NOS tubes were used right out of the manufacturing facitility, brand new. i bet tubes were much more all the same back then. Tube matching might be more important now that they have been sitting around for 80 years all in different temperatures, humidity, etc

According to Woo the amp is self-biasing, which means it’s unnecessary to match the tubes

@rhythmdevils that's a fair assumption. In practice I've had hundreds of old tubes through my hands from the 1920s & 1930s that work like new despite looking like they were war-torn, with loose bases and parts inside the glass. They are very simple, reliable devices. There are engineering-minded people who get very concerned about how equipment tests on a bench, I'm not one of those people.

And of course they agreed to it.

i've been talking to the creator and his hands are tied by the new owners, LinkTree. But money solves everything right?

I'd like to add qobuz links automaticalliy and also make it so each user can have a profile that saves their preferred order of links and which links are on and off, so you don't have to re-configure it each time. i'd contribute $100 for that.

Is this just the DS FGPA sound? I have them hooked up to a switcher and slightly perfer the DS but they sound sooo simillar. Nothing like a Yggdrasil vs Holo or vs Wavedream which are all R2R. These have the same tone, timbre, and soundstage and resolution is so close. And they are pretty different setups - for one supercaps vs LPS but there must be many other major differences

Oh, I don’t think it matters, I just meant that it scales well and sounds great with a good DAC, so i'd say whatever DAC you like, and that sound will be impartd on the iems. It's just that good ortho iems plus the Pietus can sound much better than a Modi or something.

No need to pull the PSU. I measured my Studio B at 105 VA with load and Overwerk playing. 300B are approximately 28 W (filament and plate) each while 2A3 are approx 21.25 W each. 56W output tube total for Studio B and 85 W for Studio T. Assume T is 150% compared to B. 160 VA is under 200VA, allowing for some margin.

Cool. I have seen it go both ways. I think a good optical cable from a good source beats a mediocre BNC cable from a mediocre source and vice versa. It sounds the least digital via optical.

To me, the story has been told. And so so well. I’m not interested in a remake that betrays Nolan’s story. I don’t really care if it’s mildly interesting or what. It’s done. Make a new story. Maybe in 30 years there will be a reason to update the Batman story.
