PSA: Drop has more JVC HA-FDX1 available. Still $250 and an extra $5 gets them delivered before Christmas.

Any violinists or cellists out there? I'm curious whether you think the HD600 or 650 captures the essence of your instrument best...

...but Rostropovich also sounds different on either headphone. I owned a HD600 first so it seems... "truer" to me, but I think that is only priority of ownership. It didn't seem crazy to think there was a violinist or cellist (or for that matter, any musician) here who could say why they prefer their instrument on one headphone over another (or any, for that matter), but then again, I'm not a musician!

As a woodwind musician, listening is a much different experience than playing. Still throws me off after 20 years, even when I'm at a live performance. The player's sinus cavity is part of the instrument, turns out.

Honestly don't know if me being a cello player gives me better insight. The way I play the cello sounds totally different from from the pros I've heard and it's even different from whoever claimed first chair in my orchestra. The way you hold it and bow all has an effect. Only way I could compare is if I heard Rostropovich live and through the HD 600

AV Receivers (Mandatory) require multichannel PCM (LPCM) output, regardless of ATMOS/DTSMA/TRUEHD. So question is, is WIN10/MacOS LPCM just sitting there for simple output thru USB (then TrueMB does the magic)? Hmmmm.

If you are ok with just sample rate and not bit rate, although if it isn't 44.1, it's always 24 bits (all I have seen) used geek pulses go for cheap and sq is decent.

the marketing seems to hint a lot at this being close-ish to their top shelf offerings. i would happily pay $1k for a slightly stunted or ugly/utlitarian Solaris... so i'm intrigued to see where IO lands.

LAME has been the best mp3 encoder for years now. They keep a list of "nasty" test samples that are known to cause problems:

        http://lame.sourceforge.net/quality.php

AFAIK, no one has submitted a sample in quite some time that causes problems at high bitrate encoding with the more recent builds of LAME. Pretty much all remaning issues are @128kbit/s or lower.
